    COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Jeannine Rae Wingert, 73, Council Bluffs, died December 17, 2020 at Hansen House in Council Bluffs.    Services will be held Friday, June 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling with burial in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling.  Family will greet friends Friday from 9:30-11 a.m.

Carl Peters, 76

    HARLAN -- Carl John Peters, 76, Harlan, died May 26 at Bergan Mercy Medical Center.    Services will be held Friday, June 4 at 1 p.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia.  Visitation is Friday from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Fuel Spill in North Harlan

    HARLAN -- Iowa DNR staff responded to a diesel spill in Harlan Thursday, May 27, meeting with local officials as they worked to track down its source.  The Shelby County Emergency Management Service and Harlan Fire Department investigated a report of diesel odor and red sheen in a branch of the Nishnabotna River Wednesday night.

Muhlbauer announces bid for U.S. Senate

    MANILLA -- Dave Muhlbauer of Manilla has announced his campaign for the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. Charles Grassley, becoming the first Democrat to enter the 2022 race.    Republican Sen. Grassley has retained his seat in the U.S. Senate since 1981, but it is unknown whether he will run for another term.    Muhlbauer, 37, is a fifth-generation farmer and former vice chairman of the Crawford County Board of Supervisors.

Klitgaard, Rueschenberg selected for prestigious Young LIons Jazz Band

    LINCOLN, NE – Jack Klitgaard and Mitchell Rueschenberg have been selected for the prestigious Nebraska Young Lions All-Star Jazz Band, and will be performing this week in Lincoln, NE.    Klitgaard, the son of Dr. Don and Laurel Klitgaard of Harlan, and Rueschenberg, the son of Joe and Amy Rueschenberg, Harlan, are 2021 graduates of Harlan Community High School.    The band will perform Thursday, June 3 at 7 p.m.

Ken and Janice Klein observe 51st anniversary

 HARLAN -- Ken and Janice  (Gubbels) Klein were married June 6, 1970 in Westphalia. Since the couple couldn’t celebrate their golden anniversary last year, a card shower will commemorate their 51st anniversary. Their children include Chad, Bahama, NC; Heather, Ann Arbor, MI; and Kyle (Brenda), Carroll. Cyclones finish fifth at 3A golf sectional

 ATLANTIC -- The Harlan Community boys golf team finished the season by placing fifth out of eight teams in the Class 3A Sectional Tournament held Friday, May 14, at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club. ADM was the sectional champion with a team score of 316 and Carroll placed second with a 322, both advancing to the May 20 district meet in Orange City.

Bruns qualifies for state tennis; Cyclones fourth at 1A district meet

 CARROLL -- Harlan Community senior Brock Bruns will finish his tennis career at the state tournament following his second-place effort at the Class 1A District Tournament May 12 in Carroll. Bruns, who entered the district meet seeded second in the singles bracket, finished 2-1 on the day and will now compete at the 1A State Tournament May 28-29 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo. Competition will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Cyclone squads qualify 22 entries for state track meet

 GLENWOOD (May 13) -- The Harlan Community track teams rose to the occasion at Thursday’s Class 3A State Qualifying Meet in Glenwood, posting a plethora of season and personal-bests while advancing a combined 22 entries to this week’s state track meet. The HCHS girls will take 12 entries in 10 events to Des Moines following their second-place, 132-point district performance.
