Cyclone soccer boys lose another heartbreaker to Falcons

 HARLAN (May 13) -- The Harlan Community boys soccer team went up against sixth-ranked (1A) St. Albert on Thursday in an even match against the Falcons. The Cyclones would continue their rough season with a 2-1 loss at Merrill Field. The Falcons opened the scoring with 28:15 left in the first half with a shot outside the box from junior Nate Kay.

Card shower will honor Havicks’ 60th anniversary

HARLAN -- Dr. Bruce and Kay (Schueman) Havick will celebrate their 60th anniversary. The couple were married in Avoca May 27, 1961.    Their children include Kaylee Havick of Denison; Jodie Havick, deceased; Stacie and Ernie Foss of Harlan; Jill and Scott Schiltz of Earling; and  Heather and David Kohles of Panama. They have eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Bruce is a retired veterinarian and farmer.

Card shower will honor Vern Renze’s 100th birthday

 HARLAN -- Vern Renze of Harlan will turn 100 years old on June 29, 2021. Vern was a Fuller Brush salesman for 45 years in Harlan and surrounding communities.  After he retired, he learned to play the harmonica and it became his retirement hobby. Vern’s children are Lloyd and Joy Renze; Karen Hunter; and Michael and Josie Renze.

Wendell Behrend, 80

    KIRKMAN -- Wendell D. Behrend, 80, Kirkman, died May 25 at Myrtue Medical Center.    Services will be held Saturday, May 29 at 1 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Red Line Cemetery.    Behrend is survived by brothers Wayne (Jolene) Behrend of Harlan and Richard (Lorraine) Behrend of Walnut; and special friend Darla Hall of Kirkman.

Danish villages celebrate with Tivoli Fest Lite

    ELK HORN/KIMBALLTON -- “Take a Danish vacation without a passport” this weekend at the 41st annual Tivoli Fest in Elk Horn.    Tivoli Fest will take place Friday and Saturday in Elk Horn and Kimballton after being cancelled last year due to the pandemic.    Tivoli Fest is traditionally celebrated on the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day each year.

    ELK HORN -- The Danish community of Elk Horn selected Galen and Eileen Sornson to reign as the 2021 Tivoli Fest king and queen at the events this weekend.    A humble, warm and fun-loving couple, the Sornsons reside on a farm just outside of Elk Horn that has been in the family for generations.    Born and raised on the farm, Galen has been deeply involved in the Danish community for years.

Second half surge carries HCHS past Lady Vikes

 AVOCA (May 11) -- After two goals in the first half  by AHSTW seniors Claire Denning and Abby Anzalone, a Cyclone surge of five unanswered goals in the second half led to a well-earned 6-2 victory for the Harlan Community girls soccer team on Tuesday night. AHSTW came out ready to play with a goal by Denning in the sixth minute to give the Lady Vikes an early lead.

Cyclone girls shut out Lo-Ma, 10-0

 LOGAN (May 10) -- Four Harlan Community girls scored two goals apiece on Monday as the Cyclones built a 9-0 halftime lead and cruised past Logan-Magnolia 10-0 in non-conference soccer action.
