Postponed a year, Shelby’s 150th Sesquicentennial planned for June 26-27

    SHELBY -- The opening of the time capsule on Friday, June 26 at the Shelby Park will be the kick-off event for the Shelby 150th Sesquicentennial Celebration this summer.    The celebration was originally planned for summer 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.    The committee started planning for the summer celebration in late spring of 2019.

Avoca Main Street celebrates city’s zip code day 5-15-21

    AVOCA -- Celebrate a Once in a Lifetime Event on 5-15-21, Avoca’s Zip Code Day.    There will be events on Main Street throughout the morning, and plenty of shopping opportunities in the downtown district as well.    The Avoca Post Office will be available 9-11 a.m.

Ernst makes Harlan stop, discusses pandemic issues

    HARLAN -- Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst (R) made a stop in Harlan and Shelby County Thursday, May 6 as part of her 99-county tour of Iowa.  She paid a visit to Pexton Pharmacy, a member of the Iowa Pharmacy Association, to visit with its employees and discuss the issues facing pharmacies during the pandemic.

Shelton, Lyon post hat tricks as Cyclones rout Atlantic

 HARLAN (April 30) -- Ian Shelton and Ashton Lyon both scored hat tricks as the Harlan Community boys soccer team took control in the opening minute and never looked back Friday at Merrill Field, dominating Atlantic 8-0 on Senior Night. It was just what the doctor ordered for the Cyclones, who lost several close matches in April and will now take a 2-10 overall record and 1-4 Hawkeye Ten Conference mark into a new month.

Season-best 186 leads HCHS golfers to second victory

 HARLAN (April 29) -- The Harlan Community boys golf team picked up its second dual win of the year on Thursday, carding a season-best nine-hole score of 186 to edge Clarinda by four strokes at the Harlan Golf and Country Club. Earlier in the week, HCHS lost by 40 shots at Atlantic, 168-208. HCHS (2-4 overall) counted the scores of runner-up medalist Jace Gubbels (44), Drew Bladt (45), Austin Sonderman (46) and Sam Bladt (51) against Clarinda.

HCHS boys tennis team rolls past Tigers 7-2, earns second dual win

 HARLAN (April 30) -- The Harlan Community boys tennis team improved its dual record to 2-8 here Friday with a 7-2 win over Red Oak. Brock Bruns (10-0), Mitchell Rueschenberg (10-1), Stephen Leinen (10-4) and Nolan Blum (10-0) all won convincingly in singles play and the Cyclones also swept all three doubles matches on the day. “What a great win for us!” stated HCHS coach Chad Bruns.

IKM-M boys lead area charge at Gonzales-Parrish Invitational

 GUTHRIE CENTER (April 29) -- IKM-Manning and Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton combined to win three events here Thursday in the Gonzales-Parrish Co-Ed Track Invitational. Host ACGC swept the team titles in its home meet. The Charger boys scored 190 points, followed by second-place IKM-Manning (160) and Audubon (110).
