HMU sets public hearing

HARLAN  — The Harlan Municipal Board of Trustees passed resolutions regarding the water facility at their regular board meeting on Dec. 22.    They set a date for a public hearing at the Jan.

HCHS board will remain the same for new year

HARLAN  —  The Harlan Community School District Board of Education heard presentations from FFA, Friends of Rachel, the Special Olympics and learned about the Masonic Lodge Teacher Awards at their regular board meeting Dec. 19.    They approved a progress payment to Denovo, Inc.

All of the Lights: Fundraising campaign underway for JJ Jensen

HARLAN — For many, there’s nothing like sitting under the bright lights at JJ Jensen Park and hearing the crack of baseball bats and cheers from the crowds in the summer months.    But those lights are wearing out. A $250,000 matching grant from Monogram Loves Kids Foundation is helping move forward a fundraising campaign to replace the lighting at JJ Jensen Park. Summer Nights and Ballpark Lights will bring Musco LED lights to the park.

Cyclones hand Panthers their first loss

Sophomore Aubrey Schwieso led the Cyclones to their fifth consecutive victory scoring 21 points on the night and handing the Panorama Panthers their first loss of the season.
“It feels really good,” Schwieso said. “Obviously they’re a great team and we’re on a winning streak and hopefully we’ll get one more tomorrow.”

Second-graders learn from downtown businesses

HARLAN — Second-graders from Harlan Community Primary School trekked to visit various downtown Harlan businesses and learn about what it takes to run a business on Tuesday. Students rotated between the Harlan Community Library, Zander Ink, Dr. Jay’s, Bella Salon and Bauer’s Shoe Store.The students have been learning about the economy and career goals. The businesses helped students understand if they offered goods or services.

Dream Playground at fundraising stage

HARLAN — Over the past 27 years, countless families have spent time climbing and having fun on the Dream Playground at Pioneer Park.      Those same families may have noticed the playground becoming rough over the years.    The City of Harlan is spearheading the Dream Playground Re-Imagined project that will bring a new all-inclusive playground to replace the current one.

Myrtue ER Expansion to move forward Spring 2023

    HARLAN — Myrtue Medical Center has finalized design schematics to expand and renovate the Emergency Room.    The hospital made the announcement earlier this year of its receipt of grant funding from the U.S.

‘A Courthouse Christmas’ and all that jazz

Faith Family Church held its annual dinner theater production on Friday. “A Courthouse Christmas” featured holiday music from the Harlan Community High School Jazz Experience.    Around 250 people attended the event. A portion of each ticket went to a band fundraiser, which allowed them to present a check for $2,000 to the jazz band.
 

Myrtue’s CUP project close to finishing

   A construction project at Myrtue Medical Center has been taking longer than expected but is nearing completion.
