Local businesses key for STEM grant

 HARLAN — Harlan Community School District received a STEM planning grant for a total of $60,000.    “We do a lot of things with Iowa Western Community College for juniors and seniors,” said Steve Sauvain, HCSD Director of Education.

Cyclones open season with 2-1 home win

With halftime approaching and the game tied at one, the Cyclones took the lead for good when Junior Ian Shelton assisted the ball to Senior Mason Anderson for a goal giving the Cyclones a 2-1 lead and after tight defense in the second half, their first win of the season.

Cyclones drop season opener to Panorama Panthers

The Cyclones were unable to stop the Panthers’ offense in their season opener at Merrill Field with Freshman Morgan Crees scoring two goals en route to a 5-1 victory.
“I thought we started off strong the first half, feeling out what they had.” said Cyclones Head Coach Jared Boysen. “We knew what they had last year. They had a lot of speed up top and new girls on defense.”

Shelby County Farm Bureau honors community members at annual meeting

    IRWIN — The Shelby County Farm Bureau held its 105th annual meeting Monday in Irwin, where they presented awards, approved minutes and treasurer reports, and officers were elected.    Judy Obrecht received the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award.

Harlan FFA present awards at annual banquet

    HARLAN — The Harlan FFA Chapter Banquet was held March 16. The evening consisted of a catered meal by Main Street Market, an awards ceremony and entertainment provided by Mentalist and Illusionist Brian Imbus. The evening was enjoyed by 290 members, parents and guests in attendance.       Harlan FFA 4-year senior members were recognized for their combined efforts over their years of FFA involvement.

Randall “Randy” Norman Hansen

Randall Norman Hansen, aka Randy, was born in Harlan, Iowa, on April 15, 1949 to parents, Norman and Hazel. His sister, Dixie, was born three years later. Although he wasn’t thrilled about it, he decided to let her stay.The family lived in Jacksonville, Iowa, and Randy attended Harlan High School, and graduated in 1967. He did a tour of duty in Viet Nam from 1969-1970. (which he called the worst Senior Field Trip ever).

Austa Phelps, 103

Austa Phelps, 103, Moline, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Aspen Nursing Home, Silvis.Private committal will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island.        Austa was born January 30, 1920 in Denmark, the daughter of Roger and Cena Nielsen.  She married Phillip Phelps, Sr. on October 27, 1944 in Omaha, NE.
