Trap team takes top two spots in intermediate divisions

For the first time this season, the HCHS girls track and field team got the opportunity to compete at Merrill Field against six other schools and it came in handy with a first place finish with 134 points.

Cyclones Golfers edge Monarchs by two strokes

Tuesday on the road, the HCHS boys varsity golf team competed in their first match of the year at Majestic Hills Golf Course against the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs winning 180-182.
“Getting a road win to start the season is great for these guys, especially at the always difficult Majestic Hills of Denison,” said Cyclones Head Coach Chad Swanson.

Maximum property tax levy determined

    HARLAN — The City Council approved the maximum property tax levy for fiscal year 2023-24 at $2,303,959, which represents a decrease of 6.45% from the maximum property tax dollars requested for FY24.    There were no written or oral objections received during the public hearing.    “The max property levy is the maximum of the allowed levies if we need to make any changes, of which we anticipate none,” City Administrator Gene Gettys said.

Jazz Experience places 2nd at Iowa Jazz Championships, Pella takes 1st

 HARLAN — The Harlan Community High School Jazz Experience received 2nd place at the Iowa Jazz Championships Tuesday in Ames.      Outstanding Performance Awards went to Seth Anderson on trombone, Eric Torneten on trumpet and Ian Kearney on drumset.

HCHS Theatre will present “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” next weekend

HARLAN — HCHS Theatre will present the musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” Friday, April 14 and  Saturday, April  15 at  7 p.m. and Sunday, April 16 at 2 p.m. at the HCHS Auditorium, 2102 Durant St., Harlan. The show features big dance numbers and special guests in cameo roles, Director Kayla Weis said. “It’s very funny and will appeal to most everyone,” she said. “The cast is fantastic.

Less than 24 hours after competing at the Ram Relays in Glenwood, the HCHS boys track and field didn’t skip a beat as they came out and took a fourth place finish at the Denison Co-Ed event finishing fourth out of six schools.

The HCHS boys track and field team competed at the Ram Relays Monday at Glenwood, finishing fifth out of nine schools.
“Overall, I thought we competed really well,” said Cyclones Head Coach Sam Brummer. “I thought the stuff we put out on the track had a lot of quality performances top to bottom.”
