With 22 minutes remaining in Monday’s game against the St. Albert Falcons, Junior Ian Shelton scored his second goal of the night, putting his team up 3-2 and earning their second win of the season.

More than $140,000 granted to community projects

Staff Reports    SHELBY COUNTY — The Shelby County Community Foundation awarded $140,932 to Shelby County nonprofit organizations and community projects during its Spring 2023 Grant Cycle.    All grantees met the criteria as Shelby County nonprofit agencies or organizations with charitable missions supporting community needs in the areas of civic engagement, culture, health, education, and social services.

HCHS mock trial qualifies for 24th time in 14 years

HARLAN — Harlan Community High School mock trial team had a successful program this year, with a trip to state.“This is the twenty-fourth time a HCHS mock trial team has qualified for the state tournament since the inception of the program fourteen years ago,” teacher-coach John Murtaugh said.  “The credit for this success mainly belongs to the students.  They work very hard in preparation spending countless hours perfecting their roles.”Murta

    HARLAN — Students who want career preparation and training have a new avenue to pursue.    “Harlan Community School District is extremely excited to have been asked to be a part of the Lakin Foundations program, Avenue Scholars,” said Superintendent Jenny Barnett.

Civil Air Patrol hopes to open a Harlan chapter

Staff Reports    HARLAN — Imagine being in your teens and having the chance to fly in a Black Hawk helicopter or take the controls in a small airplane. It’s the reality for participants in Civil Air Patrol.    Civil Air Patrol is an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, a nationwide program there for emergency services and disaster relief in local communities.

Trap shooting team opens new season

The Harlan trap shooting team began their 2023 season placing first with both the Intermediate and Rookie teams Saturday. The Varsity team didn’t place in the top three.
Head coach Jason Paulsen said the kids are excited the season has begun.

Cyclones finish fourth at Monarch Relays; Neuharth takes first place in multiple events

Thursday at Denison-Schleswig High School, the Cyclones took home a fourth place finish overall with 85 points, just five behind the overall winner Kuemper Catholic.

Thursday afternoon, the HCHS girls track and field team competed in the Monarch Relays taking home fifth place with 70.50 points, 66.50 behind the Atlantic Trojans, who won the event with 137 points.
According to head coach Jenny Hamilton, there were some good moments, along with some tough moments, but it’s a long season with challenges throughout the course of it.

Buckholdt named Spartans football coach for 2023

Drew Buckholdt said he was excited to be named Exira’s new football coach for the upcoming 2023 season, after former head coach and current athletic director Tom Petersen will be stepping down.
“Being a head coach is something I’ve always really wanted to do,” Buckholdt said. “Taking over for my alma mater makes it all the more special and taking it after a guy like Coach [Tom] Petersen, there’s not much more I could ask for.”
