Cyclones hope to drive the golf team to success

The HCHS girls golf team is gearing up for a new season set to begin March 30 against the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs.
“We had a pretty good group last year and we’re looking to improve and get better,” said Cyclones Head Coach Todd Bladt. “Everybody’s a year older, a little bit more experienced. I think the girls are ready to get after it and get some shots.”

MathCounts wins 1st place first time since 2013

    HARLAN  —   The Harlan Community Middle School 8th grade MathCounts team recently brought home the first place trophy from the Southwest Iowa Regional Competition held at the Boys and Girls Club in Council Bluffs on March 2.

Remembering ‘Mr. Christmas’

    HARLAN – To those who knew Dennis Siemers, former CEO of Town and Country Credit Union, it seemed he was like a kid in the candy store when it came to Christmas.    “I think he would have loved to just buy every Christmas decoration ever and put it out,” said Sharon Lucke, who worked with him on the holiday lights committee in Harlan. “He just loved Christmas.”    Barry Deuel agreed.    “He was Mr. Christmas,” Deuel said.

Tom Butler wins Firefighter of the Year award

    HARLAN — Tom Butler remembers his first and last fire call — from a fatal car accident to a barn fire on a Shelby mutual aid call. He’s seen many things over the years.    Butler retired after 34 years at the end of the year. He received one final Firefighter of the Year award from the Harlan Fire Department during their winter banquet in February.    “It was a nice tribute for a send off,” he said.

Spartan boys look to run strong this season

The Exira-EHK boys track and field team is gearing up and preparing for another season that’s right around the corner and they have a new assistant coach to help guide them. Cassidy Nerland was an All-American thrower at Grandview.

Last season was challenging for the Exira-EHK girls varsity team, but this year’s group is ready for the new season beginning in a few weeks.
“We are excited to get going,” said Spartans Head Coach Cory Bartz. “The girls are looking forward to continuing to improve from last season.”

Reep graduates from U.S. Marine Corps Boot Camp

 HARLAN — Private Luke Reep, 20, of Harlan, graduated from the United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego on February 3, 2023. Private Reep successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD San Diego as one of 40 recruits in Training Platoon 2107. While in recruit training, Private Reep achieved rifle expert.

Card shower will honor Darlene Hess’s 80th birthday

 HARLAN — Darlene Hess turned 80 years young March 7.Please join her family in helping celebrate this milestone with a card shower. Greetings may be sent to: 907 Maplecrest Drive, Harlan, IA 51537. Darlene was married to the late Dewey Hess, where they resided in Harlan and raised two children.

Open house planned for Barton’s 90th birthday

 HARLAN — Margie Barton will celebrate her 90th birthday March 19. Her family is hosting an open house Saturday, March 25 from 2 - 4 p.m. at Altamont Baptist Church, 516 Quince Rd., Harlan. Family and friends are invited to join the celebration. Margie was married to the late Bob Barton.
