Five Cyclones represent at Drake Relays

Cyclones Head Coach Sam Brummer said the HCHS boys track and field team represented well at the Drake Relays taking five Cyclones who qualified including, Wil Neuharth, Cade Sears, Jacob Birch, Matthew Sorfonden and Brehden Eggerss.

Cyclones place 4th at Lady Red Relays

Tuesday, the HCHS girls track and field team competed at the Lady Red Relays with 95 points, finishing 4th overall.
Multiple Cyclones stood out at the meet including Lindsey Sonderman who finished 1st in the 3000 and 800 meter run events. In the 3000, she finished with 10:57.81, 13 seconds ahead of Denison’s Lola Mendlik.

Cyclones drop match to Monarchs in double OT

With a few minutes left in double overtime, it looked like the HCHS boys varsity soccer team was headed for penalty kicks to determine the winner, but Sophomore Monarch Richard Gonzalez had other plans kicking the game winning goal, giving the Monarchs a 1-0 victory.
“It’s a very proud moment for those guys,” said Cyclones Head Coach Dave Voge. “They played their hearts out. It’s always close with Denison.”

Vikings tie for 4th at Phil Hummel Relays

Monday, the AHSTW boys track and field team competed at the Phil Hummel Relays taking a 4th place finish, tying with Riverside with 73 points, just four behind Missouri Valley.

Sternberg signs LOI to play basketball at BVU

AHSTW Senior Kyle Sternberg has committed to playing basketball at Buena Vista University, a private university in Storm Lake.
“It was an exciting day for sure,” Sternberg said. “I’ve always had a dream of playing college basketball ever since I was younger and finally making it official, it felt really good and I was just really proud of myself.”

Cyclones finish 7th at Monarch Invitational

The HCHS boys varsity golf team finished 7th with 349 strokes just three strokes behind Lewis Central and Atlantic who tied for 5th.
For the Cyclones, they were led by Jace Gubbels who finished 13th overall with 82 strokes, including a birdie on hole two, a par 4 and hole eight, a par 4. The winner was Grant Jansen out of ADM, finishing his day with 73 strokes.

Cyclones win 4th consecutive on Schwieso and Anderson’s big nights

Cyclone Sophomore Aubrey Schwieso scored two goals against the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs en route to a 5-0 shutout victory for the Cyclones, winning their fourth consecutive game and 7th on the season.
“It was a good night for soccer,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jared Boysen. “We knew this was going to be a similar match up to our games last week and was a close matchup last year where we were able to win 3-2.”

Joseph “Joe” Leo Kohles, 71

  Joseph “Joe” Leo Kohles was born to Delbert and Celestine “Sally” (Arkfeld) Kohles on January 14, 1952 in Harlan, Iowa. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama, Iowa until the age of 12 when he moved with his parents and four youngest siblings to San Bruno, CA.In California, he stayed busy with baseball and his paper route.

Tivoli King and Queen named

    ELK HORN — The 2023 Tivoli Fest King and Queen are Wayne and Janell Hansen. They were accompanied by Prince and Princess Theo King and Laila Niklasen.    Tivoli Fest 2023 committee held a Staley’s Chicken Dinner Friday along with the coronation of the king and queen.    Janelle was the first-ever Tivoli Princess in 1981.    Tivoli Fest will be held May 26 and 27. The theme this year is “Skål to Tivoli Fest.”

Harlan Community Jazz wraps up season with Jazz Dance

    HARLAN — Harlan Community School held its annual Jazz Dance Sunday at Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium.
