Supervisors to invite lawmakers in to discuss confinements

New additions at Grandpa’s Pumpkin Farm

IOWA’S NEWEST SUPREME COURT JUSTICE

    DES MOINES -- Susan Christensen was administered the oath of office as Iowa’s newest Supreme Court justice by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds Friday, Sept. 21 in the Iowa Supreme Court chambers.    Christensen, from Harlan, is the third woman to serve on the seven-member court, and the first new justice to join the court since 2011.

Search finds motorcyclist safe

Leaks contribute to high water use

    HARLAN – A number of water leaks during the month of August could very well be the reason the Harlan Municipal Utilities saw higher than average total water usage in the community last month.    HMU reported that the month of August had extremely high water usage, and customers were being asked to scale back on usage.  During August, the HMU water plant produced more than 29 million gallons of water, making it one of the highest production

JJ Jensen renovations get council approval

    HARLAN – Improvements at JJ Jensen Park in Harlan received approval by the Harlan City Council this week, and some concrete work could begin this fall.    The council voted unanimously to approve the low bid from Hal, Cal Inc.

Sheriff’s office to purchase body cams

    COUNTY -- The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has received approval from the county’s board of supervisors to purchase body cameras for its officers, as well as a computer to store the audio and video footage.    Sheriff Neil Gross said the department already purchased one camera and has utilized it in the last few weeks, and the cost to outfit the remaining officers is estimated at $8,935, with the computer cost of $879.  Both will be paid

Goshorns inducted into Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame

    COUNTY -- Rich and Bev Goshorn have been inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame representing Shelby County.    The Iowa 4-H Foundation sponsors the annual Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Iowa State Fair. Counties nominate volunteers, community leaders, and Extension staff members who have exemplified outstanding service and dedication to the 4-H youth program in their county.

Avoca wastewater discharge ended

AVOCA -- On Sunday, Sept. 16, the city of Avoca, successfully ended a discharge of untreated wastewater.    City officials learned of the discharge Sept. 16, but think it was ongoing since Friday, Sept.

Spartan Homecoming

EXIRA -- Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton will celebrate homecoming activities next week.     The homecoming parade will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 in Exira.  A free-will donation homecoming tailgate will be held in Exira from 5-7 p.m. sponsored by the E/EH-K Leo Leadership Club.    The Spartans will take on West Harrison at 7 p.m. in the homecoming game, and the dance, sponsored by after-prom parents, will be held in the Exira gym. 

GREENRIDGE SHOW A SUCCESS!

    IRWIN -- The Greenridge Steam and Gas Show near Irwin was a huge success once again this year. With beautiful weather, participants were able to learn about old-time farming at the site this weekend.    See Friday’s Harlan News-Advertiser for more photos from the Greenridge event, including youth day which was held on Friday.
