Six candidates on ballot for Sh. Co. Extension Council

HARLAN - Voters will have the opportunity to elect six members of the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Shelby County Extension Council from a slate of six candidates at the Nov. 6 general election.    “The council members elected this year will be involved in bringing educational opportunities to Shelby County for the next four years,” Mary Taggs, Extension Educator said.

Cox trial continued to 2019

    HARLAN -- The trial of former Harlan City Administrator Terry Cox on charges of first-degree theft, felonious misconduct in office and tampering with records has been continued.    Shelby County court records indicate that the pre-trial conference is now scheduled for March 18, 2019 and the jury trial is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

Daberkow honored for years of service on chain crew

    HARLAN -- Harlan’s Richard Daberkow was presented with a plaque from the Harlan Community Athletic Department at the final HCHS home football game of the season, honoring him for 40 years of service on the football chain crew and for 20 years of volunteering at high school and middle school track meets.

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Police Department and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office are hampering the drug activity efforts in the community with an increase in the number of narcotic-related arrests in recent months.    The Harlan Police Department netted a total of 27 different narcotic-related charges filed in Shelby County during August, and 43 in September.  The sheriff’s office had 16 in August, and point to the utilization of its new K-9 unit

Wagner “inadvertently” fails to disclose military leave; pays back unused vacation day money not entitled to receive

Firefighter Dies from Medical Incident at Combine Fire in Shelby County

(Earling) The Shelby County Emergency Management Office issued a press release Saturday evening regarding the loss of a firefighter at the scene of a combine and field fire in Shelby County on Saturday.

To Protect and Serve

    HARLAN -- “Most of the misconceptions are that police hate everybody. We don’t, we are here to protect and serve,” Derrick Yamada said.    Yamada has been a police officer for 11 years. He attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in 2011 and became a certified reserve officer in 2011.    Yamada decided to become a police officer because of his Grandpa D, who was a police officer. 

Community Chest hopes to raise $50,000

    COUNTY -- Shelby County Community Chest has kicked off its annual fund drive with hopes of raising $50,000 this year for local organizations.    Shelby County Community Chest raises funds for local non-profit agencies which provide valuable services to youth, for area residents and to communities in the Shelby County area.
