Walnut Festival of Trees Nov. 23-24

    WALNUT -- Walnut will host a Festival of Trees Friday-Saturday, Nov. 23-24 in conjunction with Walnut’s annual Christmas Antique Walk.    The event is being sponsored by the Walnut Creek Historical Society and Museum.  Contests will be held for decorated trees, festive table-settings and nativity scenes.  Prizes will be given for the top three in each category.

Harlan Lions Club displaying holiday lights at Potter Park

    HARLAN -- The Harlan City Council has given approval to allow the Harlan Lions Club to create a holiday decoration display using LED lights at the Potter Park shelter house in Harlan during the holiday season.    The council also voted to waive the permit fee for the shelterhouse use for the decorations.    Lions Club members are hoping many people will view the display which will be in the shelter house near the museum complex especially

    HARLAN – Harlan Community Schools Superintendent Justin Wagner Friday released information for school district patrons about inclement weather processes, now that winter is arriving.    In an e-mail, Wagner said, “As the seasons change, inclement weather is inevitable. Chairity gala raises $26,000 for restoration

    ELK HORN -- Whimsically decorated chairs, homemade raspberry pie, an opportunity to parachute out of a military aircraft, and a chance to auctioneer for a minute are just a few of the items that were up for bid at the charity auction Saturday, November 3 to benefit the Danish Windmill in Elk Horn.

WINDMILL RESTORATION TAKING SHAPE

AHSTW FFA attends national convention

    INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- The AHSTW FFA Chapter recently traveled to the National FFA convention in Indianapolis, IN.    AHSTW chapter members on the trip consisted of Kyley Nelsen, Lizzie Hatch, Abbie Willett, Erin Carroll,  Kolby Weihs, Joey Brenneis, Cody Roskens, and Kyle Jorgensen. AHSTW members joined a charter bus with FFA chapters from South Page, Shenandoah, Fremont-Mills, Fairfax, MO, and Tarkio MO.

   HARLAN -- “You don’t every want to be first, if you are first you are very ill. Being first isn’t good in the ER,” Tracy Axland said. Axland and Nicole Ohlinger are both day shift emergency room nurses. Axland has been a nurse for 31 years and received her degree from Jennie Edmundson School of Nursing. Ohlinger has been a nurse for six years and received her degree from Nebraska Methodist College.    Their 12 hour shifts run from 7 a.m.

Get Out and Vote Tuesday, Nov. 6!

    REGIONAL -- Voters will head to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 6 in a general election that will see a number of state and federal races for office, but only one local contested race -- that being for county supervisor.    Polls will be open from 7 a.m.-9 p.m.

IN REMEMBRANCE Earling Fire Chief Tom Henrich

EARLING -- The funeral processional for Earling Fire Chief Tom Henrich was held Saturday, Oct. 27 in Earling, with his casket and fire gear being carried to the St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery aboard an Earling fire truck.  Fire trucks from across Iowa, with firefighters aboard, attended to pay tribute to the chief and were part of the processional.    Henrich died while responding to a combine fire call near Earling Saturday, Oct. 20.

TRUCK CONVOY!

    REGIONAL -- On Saturday, Oct. 6, IKM-Manning’s Coby Fineran and Beth Hagedorn attended the Truck Convoy for Special Olympics, a national one-day celebration of the trucking company industry, allied partners and law enforcement all working together to help raise money for Special Olympics Iowa.    The morning started started off with an auction to see which three trucks would lead the Convoy, which raised a total of $20,000.

Swanson represents HCHS at World Food Prize

    DES MOINES -- High school students from 27 U.S. states and territories and 10 countries were selected to attend the 25th Annual Global Youth Institute October 17-20 in Des Moines.    Jayden Swanson from Harlan Community High School was among the 210 students selected to attend the prestigious three-day conference.

Volunteers for Lights on Courthouse Square needed Sun., Nov. 4

This Sunday November 4th, we are looking for volunteers to put up the lights in the Court House Square. We are meeting at 10 A.M. at the courtyard. We need trucks, ladders.

Sheriff’s department “Here for you 24/7”

    COUNTY -- "We're here for you 24/7 and when I say we it's not just the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, it's law enforcement and law enforcement officers in general because it's one big family," Neil Gross said.    Gross has been the Shelby County sheriff for a year and a half.
