Mary Ada Wade, 84

Mary Ada (Marshall) Wade, 84 formally from Harlan, died Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at the Blue Hills Nursing Home in Independence, Missouri. She was born August 16,1939 at home in Mondamin, Iowa to Henry Carl and Florence (Neill) Marshall.  She grew up in Mondamin and Modale graduating with Modale High School class of 1957.  Her first job was secretary to the principal at the school.

Byron Fred Kelley

  On December 11, 2022, Byron Fred Kelley, grandson of long time Harlan residents Walter and Clara Kelley, now deceased, passed to join his Father and Mother William J Kelley and Alice Irene Kelley.   Byron passed peacefully in hospital after battling cancer.  Byron is now reunited in love with other deceased family and friends.He was born on February 19, 1956 in Rapid City, SD to William Kelley and Alice Kelley.

Beverly J. Barrett, 87

Beverly J. Barrett, age 87, died Saturday, May 4 2024, at her home in Brandon, SD.  Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD at a later date.Beverly, the daughter of Floy (Hon) Obrecht and Ben Obrecht was born on June 9, 1936 in Harlan, IA. She attended school in Harlan and graduated from Harlan Community High School in 1954. Bev was united in marriage to Robert Charles Barrett on March 30, 1961 in Hermosa Beach, California.

Mariann Kathryn Nielsen, 92

Mariann Kathryn Nielsen was born on March 28, 1931 in Union Township.  She was raised by her foster parents, Andrew and Tina Johnson from Avoca, Iowa.  She attended Avoca School and graduated with the class of 1950.She was working at the Wedgewood Café in Avoca when she met the love of her life, Leo.  They were married on November 14, 1951 in Harvey, Illinois.  Leo and Mariann were blessed with three children; Calvin, Carrie, and Colleen.  The

Martin Zaccone

Cologero Martino Zaccone was born in Council Bluffs, lowa, on November 11, 1932, to Paolino Zaccone and Rosaria Zuchetto Zaccone. Born on the feast of St. Martin of Tours, he was always called Martino, so he legally changed his name to Martin Charles. The first two years of his life were spent in Sicily, where his parents immigrated from. The family returned to Council Bluffs and in 1950 he graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School.

Linda Kay Robinson, 85

Linda Kay Robinson, daughter of Bernard and Freda (McDanial) Ankenbauer was born December 15, 1938 in Carroll, Iowa.  She was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Dedham, Iowa.  She attended grade school at Dedham Country School, and graduated from Carroll High School in Carroll, Iowa.  After high school, Linda went to AIB in Des Moines.On March 20, 1960, Linda was united in marriage to Lloyd Robinson in Scranton, Iowa.

Laura Arkfeld-Mohr

Laura Arkfeld-Mohr was the first born of nine children to Henry and Irene (Graeve) Arkfeld on June 8, 1951. Laura attended St. Mary’s in Panama and  Portsmouth for grade school. She graduated with the Harlan Community High School class of 1969. During Laura’s senior year she was chosen for the Halo Hall of Fame sponsored by Logeland Studio.  A special year was 5th grade.

Julia S. (Judy) Knott, 99

 Julia S. (Judy) Knott was born November 20, 1924 to John and Mary B. (Keane) Arkfeld on a farm west of, IA. She was baptized, confirmed and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Panama with the class of 1942. She attended the College of Mount Saint Scholastica at Atchison, KS and the University of Nebraska in Omaha, NE. She graduated as a registered nurse from Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA in 1947.She worked at St.

Phyllis Marie (Buttler) Kline, 89

Phyllis Marie (Buttler) Kline, the daughter of Kenneth Buttler and Marjorie     Rumelhart was born October 22, 1934, at her parents’ home in Fansler, Iowa and died January 21, 2024 in Harlan, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 2 months, and 30 days.Phyllis was baptized at the Exira Christian Church. She attended the Exira     Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1953.

Luise Brockhoff, 91

Luise passed away peacefully at her home in Harlan, Iowa on March 19, 2024.Born Luise Gier in Baasem, Germany on February 23, 1933, to Aloysius and Maria (Keop) Anna Gier. She met her husband, Robert Brockhoff Sr, while he was in the US Air Force stationed in Germany.

Lisa Shafer, 56

Lisa Shafer, age 56 of Stillwell, KS, entered into Heaven on April 1, 2024 surrounded by her family.On October 18, 1967 a beautiful baby girl, Lisa Renee Claussen, was born to Hilton and Mary Claussen in Seneca, KS.Lisa grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa with her mom raising her three children in the Catholic faith.

Alfred J. Pauley

Alfred J. Pauley was born December 13, 1935 in Panama, Iowa. He was the fifth child of Leo & Louise (Schmitz) Pauley. Alfred was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic church. He attended St. Mary’s elementary school through high school. After schooling he joined the United States Army in 1957 and proudly served in Korea until 1958.

John Raymond McKeighan, 91

John Raymond McKeighan, 91, died on Friday, March 1, 2024, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley. He was born on October 11, 1932, in Tennant, Iowa to George and Elsa (Davis) McKeighan. John grew up in the Portsmouth area and attended school in Portsmouth. On May 6, 1953, John married Lotus Patten at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Portsmouth. To this union three children were born, Pat, Cindy and Kathy.

Joyce Ann Kenkel

Joyce Ann Kenkel, daughter of Odelia (Gaul) and Lavern Foxhoven, was born June 20, 1945 in Westphalia, Iowa.  She was baptized at St. Boniface Catholic Church.  She made her first communion at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa and was confirmed at St.

Melvin J. Bruck

 Melvin Bruck, son of Tony & Marie (Mary Bissen) Bruck, was born on February 11,1945 in Earling, Iowa. He was one of 10 children with 4 brothers and 5 sisters. Melvin was baptized, had first communion, and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa, where he remained a lifelong member. He attended school at St Joseph’s in Earling and graduated in 1963.After high school he joined the National Guard.

Jane Ellen Wilwerding, 82

  Jane Ellen Wilwerding was one of eleven children born to Irene and Carl Wilwerding. She was born in Earling, Iowa along with her twin sister Judy Thraen. Jane attended several different elementary schools as a child and eventually graduated from Woodbine High School.In 1961, Jane chose to enter religious life with the Sisters of St. Francis in Dubuque, Iowa and was professed in 1969.
