ANNIVERSARIES - Ann and Dennis Andersen

    HARLAN -- Dennis and Ann Andersen of Harlan will celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary on August 29.    The couple’s family includes Stephanie and Adam Wuestewald, Norwalk; and Jesse Andersen and Chantel Lytle, Harlan. The Andersens have five grandchildren.

Gettys, Jr. hired as new Harlan city administrator

    HARLAN – Gene Gettys, Jr. will be the next Harlan city administrator after accepting an offer of employment from the Harlan City Council Friday, Aug.

Search begins for mayor replacement

    HARLAN – With the hiring of Gene Gettys, Jr. as the community’s new city administrator, city officials say he will have to resign as mayor.    In planning, the Harlan City Council initially voted Friday, Aug.

Motorist safety urged as school classes begin

    REGIONAL -- School districts in the greater Shelby County area have begun classes for the year, and local officials are urging motorists to be on the lookout for children as they make their way to and from school.    For the third school year in Harlan, motorists are reminded of the crosswalk/red light along the busy Chatburn Ave.

Harlan Community Freshmen Baseball Team Finishes 12-13 Overall

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community freshmen baseball team finished the 2016 season with an overall record of 12-13 under the direction of Coach Brian James.

Cyclone boys of summer bring home 3-A championship

 HARLAN -- It was a season to remember for the 2016 Harlan Community baseball team. One year after falling just one win short of a state title, the Cyclones made their sixth consecutive trip to Principal Park in late July and left as Class 3-A state champions following a decisive 12-4 win over Carlisle.

Harold Nollen, 86

    HARLAN -- Harold “Harry” Nollen, 86, Harlan, died August 19 at Veteran’s Medical Center.    Services will be held Friday, Aug. 26 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan.  Visitation is Friday from 10-11 a.m.

Laverne Clark, 89

    HARLAN -- Laverne A. Clark, 89, Harlan, died August 13 at Elm Crest Retirement Community.    Services were held Monday, Aug. 22 at 11 a.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin.    Clark is survived by daughters Vicki Clark of Harlan and Joleen Fiscus of Harlan; son Larry (Shalkye) Clark of Kimballton; sister-in-law Jean Lansman of Harlan; seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

    DES MOINES -- Shelby County area dancers performed in the Bill Riley Talent Show at the Iowa State Fair this past week.
