    HARLAN -- Gary “Goose” Lee Anderson, 63, Harlan, died August 8 at his home.    Services were held Saturday, Aug. 13 at noon at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial at a later date.    Anderson is survived by mother Delores (Jensen) Anderson of Harlan; spouse Janice (Mansfield) Anderson of Harlan; son Brandon Anderson of Harlan; brothers Rick “Stick” (Annette) Anderson of Harlan and Dennis “Bucket” (Jean) Anderson of Harlan. 

New signs welcoming visitors to Shelby County

   COUNTY -- New signs to welcome visitors into Shelby County have now been put in place.    The Shelby County Board of Supervisors has authorized the project, which has been in the works for nearly a year.    “They had fallen into disrepair and had weathered a little bit,” said Todd Valline, Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and Industry Executive Director.

Early evening storm brings high wind and torrential rains

An August thunderstorm dumped between 2.5" - 3" on Harlan in a matter of two hours and the high winds tore numerous limbs across the City of Harlan down. It appeared most of the significant tree limb damage to homes and property was due to rotted limbs that between the weight of the rain, the wind and the weak tree structure sent trees tumbling across town. Apparently its natures way of cleaning up !

    SIOUX CITY -- The Rev. Judith “Judy” Ann Campbell Piper, 68, Sioux City, died August 4 at St. Luke’s Hospital.    Services will be held Friday, Aug. 12 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Visitation is Friday from 9-11 a.m.

Ether Dea, 99

    AVOCA -- Esther M. Dea, 99, Avoca, died Monday, Aug. 8 in Avoca.    Services will be held Friday, Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Avoca with burial in the Graceland Cemetery at Avoca.  A prayer service was held Thursday, Aug. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the church.  Friends were asked to call Thursday from 4-8 p.m.

Jay Bell, 90

    STORY CITY -- Jay Kenyon Bell, 90, Story City, died Saturday, Aug. 6 at Bethany Manor in Story City.    Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 13 at 11 a.m.
