HARLAN -- Galan and Janet Johannsen of Harlan will mark their 50th wedding anniversary on September 2. The couple celebrated with a family weekend in July in Kansas City.    Their family is planning a card shower in their honor. Cards will reach them if sent to 834 Timber Road, Harlan, IA 51537.

HARLAN -- Students and staff headed back to the classroom this week as the beginning of the school year got under way at Harlan Community on Tuesday, Aug. 23. 

    PANAMA -- The Shelby County Trails Committee is in the early stages of planning a new bike trail that will run five miles from Panama to Portsmouth.    “We just want to get trails in the county is what it amounts to,” said Dean Kloewer, member of the Shelby County Trails committee.    The Wabash Trace Nature Trail currently has plans to extend to nearby towns within the next few years.

    REGIONAL -- Local officials are saying the threat of Zika virus transmission in the Shelby County area and the state of Iowa is extremely low.    Yet there is a risk to Iowans when they travel to Zika-affected areas.    The continued transmission of Zika virus in the Caribbean, Central and South America, and a very small area of Miami, FL, means those who travel to these areas of local, active transmission should be aware of the Zika risk.

    COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Debbra Sue Fusselman-Vaughn, 63, Council Bluffs, died August 18 at CHI Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs.    Services were held Thursday, Aug. 25 at 10 a.m. at Maher Funeral Home in Council Bluffs with burial in the South Lawn Cemetery in Atlantic following the service.    Fusselman is survived by daughter Andrea Vaughn and fiance Ron Faust, Jr.

    COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Clifford Lee Fusselman, 65, Council Bluffs, died August 18 at Golden Living Center in Omaha, NE.    Services were held Thursday, Aug. 25 at 10 a.m.

    MOUNT VERNON, IL -- Dorothy Elizabeth McKeighan, 102, Mount Vernon, IL.    Services were held Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. at Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon.    McKeighan is originally from Westphalia.  She is survived by daughters Dr. Ann M. Lee of Summerfield, FL, Mary K. (Ajit) Sanghvi of Philadelphia, PA, and Teresa M.
