HCS school year begins on August 23

    HARLAN -- Students can enjoy an extra week of summer again this year before heading back to classes as Harlan Community School District prepares for a new school year.    The first day of school in the 2016-2017 school year at Harlan Community Schools will be on Tuesday, Aug. 23.    Parents and guardians should be aware that the first day of school, and Wednesday, Aug. 24, will see a 1:30 p.m.

Community Chest offering funding for non-profits

    COUNTY -- Non-Profit agencies within Shelby County will have until the end of August to complete applications for funding from Shelby County Community Chest.    Funds from SCCC are made possible by the generosity of local donors to the SCCC annual fund drive which will be taking place this fall.  Shelby County Community Chest accumulates and then disburses the funds from this campaign to local non-profits for a single year.

Transportation at heart of Blue Zones tour

    HARLAN -- On Tuesday, Aug. 2, Dan Burden gave a presentation about why active transportation makes sense on behalf of the Blue Zones Project sponsored by Wellmark.    The basement of the library was filled of various community members curious about the walkability and bikeability of Harlan.    Burden started by showing the distance that typical generations have walked on a daily basis.

Crops Doing Well Through Growing Season

    PANAMA -- Donald Hoffman, 70, Panama, died August 14 at his home in Panama.    Services are pending at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan. 

Laverne Clark, 89

    HARLAN -- Laverne A. Clark, 89, Harlan, died August 13 at Elm Crest Retirement Community.    Services are pending at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan. 

George Kintner, 90

    ELK HORN -- George Kintner, 90, Elk Horn, formerly of Harlan, died August 12 at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn.    Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 20 at 10 a.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Visitation will be Saturday from 9-10 a.m.

Mary Schechinger, 83

    WATERLOO -- Mary Jean Holler Schechinger, 83, Waterloo, formerly of Westphalia, died July 21 at Windsor Care Facility in Cedar Falls.    Services will be held Friday, Aug. 19 at 1 p.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia.    Schechinger was married to Michael Schechinger who died in 2013.  She is survived by daughter Linda (Kevin) Gaul; son John W. (Vicki) Holler, Jr.
