    DES MOINES -- Lowell L. Juhl, 70, Des Moines, formerly of Harlan, died Friday, Aug. 26 in Des Moines.    Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 10 at 10:30 a.m.

Sherry Hansen, 73

    HARLAN -- Sherry Hansen, 73, Harlan, died September 1 at Methodist Hospital.    Services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton with burial in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Kimballton.  Visitation was held Monday, Sept. 5 from 2-8 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m.

Ahrenholtz inducted into Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame

    AMES - Because of their countless hours given to the Iowa 4-H program, 125 Iowa 4-H volunteers from 95 counties were welcomed into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame on Sunday, Aug. 21 at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair.    Among those inducted was Roger Ahrenholtz, Defiance, representing Shelby County.    Inductees were introduced on stage and awarded a certificate.

It’s official: Gettys as city administrator

    HARLAN – Gene Gettys, Jr. officially was appointed as Harlan City Administrator Tuesday, Aug. 30 at a special meeting of the Harlan City Council.    In doing so, the council also accepted Gettys’ resignation as mayor.  Both actions were approved unanimously by council members Mike Kolbe, Jay Christensen, Greg Bladt, Sharon Kroger, Dave Pedersen and mayor pro tem Dave Miller.

Utilities to lease part of old headquarters

    HARLAN -- Harlan Municipal Utilities will begin renting a portion of their old headquarters facility on east Hwy 44 to Shelby County Community Outreach.    The month-to-month lease arrangement will cover an area of approximately 20 feet by 60 feet in the southwest corner of the building.  Rent will be $1 per month.    SCCO will move some of their larger items out of various storage facilities around the community into the single, easier to

Former area priest charged with invasion of privacy

    REGIONAL -- The Iowa Attorney General’s Office has charged Father Paul Monahan with five counts of invasion of privacy, a serious misdemeanor.    The charges stem from an alleged incident involving Father Monahan at a high school track meet in April, 2016.        Father Monahan plans to plead not guilty.

Myrtue Medical Board approves organizational goals

    HARLAN -- Goals for the past year and future organizational goals for Myrtue Medical Center were reviewed at the MMC Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday morning. CEO Barry Jacobsen gave a presentation on the highlights of past and future goals. Jacobsen outlined goals under six pillars including community, finance, growth, people, quality and service.     The board approved the organizational goals following Jacobsen’s presentation.

Cyclones handed titanic opening defeat, 45-13

HCHS netters settle for Silver Pool crown

 HARLAN -- Following six matches, 15 sets and nine and a half hours of volleyball on Saturday, Harlan Community emerged as the winner of the Silver Pool and essentially placed fourth in the season-opening Cyclone Invitational. HCHS finished with a 4-2 match record and went 10-5 in set play, coming within a point of beating eventual champion Treynor and qualifying for the coveted Gold Pool final bracket. The Cyclones had won their home tourname
