Don’t miss the action at Carstens Farm Days

    SHELBY - Iowa farm history will come to life September 10-11 at Carstens Farm during the 34th Annual Carstens Farm Days.  Threshing machines, saw mill operations, crafters and vendors, quilt show, plus much more will abound at the farm.  The Carstens family farm home and the many out-buildings will be open for tours.  There will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Hearing Hats

HARLAN -- Emma Barnes found a passion and a cause in sewing headbands for children with hearing aids.    “You know that you’re helping people and you’re helping these families,” Barnes said. “You’re improving the life of the child. Now that they are able to hear, they aren’t taking out their hearing aid and damaging it.”    Barnes’ family friends, Matt and Michelle Bruck, had a child with hearing aids.

Police investigating series of burglaries

    HARLAN – Harlan Police are investigating a series of burglaries and attempted break-ins throughout Harlan the past three weeks, and are asking the public for additional help in catching those involved.    Police chief Frank Clark said the department has received seven reports of burglaries, of which four have been determined to be burglaries and three as suspicious activity.  The most recent was last Thursday morning at roughly 4 a.m., whe

    HARLAN -- Viola M. Hass, 88, of Harlan died on Sunday, September 4 in Manilla.    Services will be held on Friday, September 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan with burial in the Nishnabotna Cemetery, Manilla.    Visitation was held on Thursday, September 8 from 2-8 p.m.

Linda Chambers, 72

    HARLAN -- Linda L. Chambers, 72, Harlan, died on Tuesday, September 6 at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan.    Services will be held on Saturday, September 10 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Harlan. Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.    Visitation will be held on Friday, September 9 from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Gunnar Nielsen, 91

Melvin “Mel” Huber, 59

    HARLAN -- Melvin “Mel” L. Huber, 59, Harlan, died Monday, September 5at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.    Celebration of Life services will be held on Friday, September 9 at 2 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in rural Afton, IA.    Visitation with family receiving friends will be held from 1 p.m.

Mel Huber, 59

    HARLAN -- Melvin “Mel” Huber, 59, Harlan, formerly of Creston, died Monday, Sept. 5 at the Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, NE.    Services are pending at Powers Funeral Home in Creston.

Viola Hass, 88
