Department of Cultural Affairs reps hear county project pitches

    HARLAN – Local economic development officials entertained a group from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs Wednesday, Sept.

Gerald Nairn, 70

    HARLAN -- Gerald L. “Jerry” Nairn, 70, Harlan, died Monday, Sept. 26 in Harlan.    Services will be held Saturday, Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. at Rohde Funeral Home in Kingsley with burial in the Greenwood Cemetery at Pierson.  A memorial prayer service will be held Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan. Friends may call Friday from 2-7 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m.

    CHICAGO, IL -- Portsmouth native Jen Davidson won gold in female 4-way formation skydiving at the 2016 World Parachuting Championships this month at Skydive Chicago.

Generation Day!

Harlan Community High School celebrated homecoming week this week with a series of dress-up days.  Tuesday was Generation Day, and these students and teachers got in the spirit.  Underclassmen dressed up as babies while upperclassmen and teachers dressed up as older individuals.

Thøgersen named new museum director

    ELK HORN -- After a comprehensive search that started in the spring of 2015, the board of directors and staff of the Museum of Danish America are announcing the selection of Rasmus Thøgersen as its new executive director.    Thøgersen (pronounced too-er-sen) is from Hellerup, the suburb north of Copenhagen in Denmark.

County proposes small business incentive program

    COUNTY – Shelby County is recommending a business program that will provide financial incentives to companies that create new jobs within Shelby County.    The county’s board of supervisors is proposing paying a company  a certain dollar amount for new, full-time equivalent jobs created that are in place for three years.  At the end of the three-year period, the monies would be paid.    The amount per job has yet to be determined, but in p

Weddings - Madeline and Brent Bruck

    OMAHA -- Madeline Novoa of Columbia, MO and Brent Bruck of St. Louis, MO exchanged marriage vows  on June 10, 2016 at St. John’s Catholic Church on the Creighton University campus in Omaha. The 6:30 p.m. double ring ceremony was performed by Father Greg Carlson.    Parents of the couple are Jose and Laura Novoa, Omaha; and Bruce and Karen Bruck, Portsmouth.

Second-half surge carries Cyclones past A-D-M

 ADEL -- Another week, another high-scoring, three-hour marathon for the Harlan Community football team. Only this time, it was the Cyclones doing much of the second-half celebrating as Nick Foss gained 395 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns in a 58-34 victory over Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Friday night. The game was tied 20-20 with 4:37 left in the first half before HCHS outscored the Tigers 38-14 the rest of the way - including 28-6 duri
