Rita Claussen, 87

    HARLAN -- Rita Isabel Claussen, 87, Harlan, died October 8 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services will be held Thursday, Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  A prayer service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.  Visitation is Wednesday from 5-8 p.m.

Pauline Ripley, 97

    MANILLA -- Pauline Ripley, 97, Manilla, died October 7 at the Manilla Manor.    Services were held Monday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. at Church of Christ in Irwin with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Irwin.    Ripley is survived by son Lee Armentrout of Denison; stepdaughter Joyce (Bob) Otkin of Minnesota; six nieces and three nephews.    Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of arrangements. 

Wilda Knudsen, 86

    LIBERAL, KS -- Wilda Grace “Grandma K” Knudsen, 86, Liberal, KS, died Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.    Services were held Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church in Liberal with burial in the Restlawn Cemetery.    Knudsen is survived by sons Dr.

    EARLING -- Russell “Rusty” John Buckley, 67, Earling, died October 5 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.    Services were held Monday, Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling with burial in the St.

    HARLAN -- Darwin and Karen Andersen of Harlan will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on October 12. Their family is requesting a card shower in their honor.    Cards will reach them if sent to 1211 5th Street, Harlan, IA 51537. 

ENGAGEMENTS - Ryan Lefeber and Kate Shindelar

    RURAL HARPER, IA -- Kate Shindelar of Washington, IA and Ryan Lefeber of Ottumwa will marry on October 29 at SS Peter and Paul Historic Catholic Church in rural Harper.    Kate is the daughter of William and Kay Witthoft, Washington; and Gary Shindelar, Sullivan, IL. Ryan is the son of Dan and Charlene Lefeber, Portsmouth.

    HARLAN -- Sarah Kathleen Olson and Bryan Nicholas Lucke both of Omaha were married on July 2, 2016 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. Pastor Phil Nielsen performed the 3 p.m. double ring ceremony.        Parents of the couple are Craig and Judith Olson, Harlan; and Kevin and Sharon Lucke, Harlan.

HCS Statement on National Clown Threats against Schools

    “We have been tracking threats that have been made against schools across the country by individuals dressed in clown attire.    “We take these threats seriously and any students attempting to dress as clowns or scare others using clown attire will face consequences.    “We have been in touch with local law enforcement and they are tracking this as well.”

Shelby County Auditor Candidates square off in forum Tuesday

    COUNTY -- The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and Industry is hosting a candidates forum Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Harlan Community High School auditorium.    Shelby County Auditor candidates incumbent Marsha Carter (D-Defiance) and Mark Maxwell (R-Harlan) will discuss the issues and answer questions from the public.    The two both will appear on the November 8 general election ballot.
