HCHS sweeps Denison on Senior Night

 HARLAN -- The start was sluggish and the finish a bit shaky, but Harlan Community was plenty dominant between as part of a 25-14, 25-14, 25-18 Senior Night volleyball sweep of Denison here Thursday. The victory clinched at least a tie for fifth place in the final Hawkeye Ten standings as HCHS improved to 16-15 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

Panthers hand AHSTW first loss, 28-6

 LOGAN -- In a battle of district unbeatens, Logan-Magnolia showcased a powerful rushing attack to hand AHSTW its first loss of the year Friday night, prevailing 28-6 to clinch the Class 1-A, District 7 championship. The Panthers improved to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the district, while the Vikings are now 7-1 overall and 5-1 in district play entering this week’s important regular season finale against Missouri Valley (6-2, 4-2).

 MISSOURI VALLEY -- Payton Sporrer of IKM-Manning and AHSTW’s Dalton Fischer and Jaycie Schueman all earned individual medals by placing in the top 12 of Monday’s Western Iowa Conference Cross Country Meet at the Logan-Mo.

Charles Gearhart, 91

    HARLAN -- Charles R. Gearhart, 91, Harlan, died Sunday, Oct. 16 in Harlan.    Services will be held Friday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Friends were asked to call Thursday, Oct. 20 from 2-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m.

Violet Mae Hazelton, 93

    MADISON, WI -- Violet Mae (Berge) Hazelton, 93, Madison, WI, died Tuesday, Oct. 18 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.    A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
