Harlan Patriots 6th grade team repeats as league champion

 WEST DES MOINES -- The Harlan Patriots 6th grade football team capped a perfect 6-0 season on Saturday, October 22, defeating the Nevada Titans 26-0 in a championship playoff game held under the lights at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines. The Harlan Patriots 3rd-4th grade team also won its playoff game on October 23 at Norwalk, defeating the WDM Texans 19-18 to finish 3-3 in the Junior Division, tied for eighth place out of 20 total teams. B

HCMS charging admission for basketball, wrestling

 HARLAN -- Starting with the current 2016-17 season, Harlan Community Middle School will be charging admission to all home basketball games and wrestling meets for 7th and 8th grade.

Three Special Olympics bowlers qualify for state

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- A group of 17 Special Olympics athletes from the Harlan Community Schools (grades 6-8) participated in a regional bowling tournament at Thunderbowl in Council Bluffs on October 4. Three Cyclone bowlers advanced to the November 19 state tournament in Sioux City by placing first at regionals.

Richard Mattox, 77

    EARLING -- Richard R. “Dick” Mattox, 77, Earling, formerly of Shelby, died Monday, Nov. 14 in Harlan.    Services will be held Friday, Nov. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Shelby with burial in the Shelby Cemetery.  Friends were asked to call Thursday, Nov. 17 from 2-9 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-8 p.m.

Joshua Lawson, 36

    FT. COLLINS, CO -- Joshua Carl Lawson, 36, of Bellevue, NE and Ft. Collins, CO, formerly of Earling, died November 14.    Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 19 at 11 a.m.

Bryce Albright, 17

    SHELBY -- Bryce Wayne Albright, 17, Shelby, died November 13 at his home.    Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. at AHSTW High School in Avoca with burial in the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca.  Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 18 from 5-8 p.m.

Mary Slaven, 99

    PAPILLION, NE -- Mary A. (Reinig) Slaven, 88, Papillion, NE, formerly of Portsmouth, died Saturday, Nov. 12 at her home.    Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 19 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth with burial in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 18 from 5-8 p.m.

ANNIVERSARIES - Larry and Vicki Schmitz

    WESTPHALIA -- Larry and Vicki Schmitz of Westphalia marked their 60th wedding anniversary with a family celebration in Des Moines. They also celebrated milestone birthdays.         Larry’s 80th birthday was October 11. Vicki observed her 80th birthday on November 13, also their anniversary date.
