Birthday Milestones - Dallas Havick

    HARLAN -- Dallas Havick of Harlan will celebrate his 100th birthday at an open house on Saturday, November 19 from 1-4 p.m. at the Therkildsen Activity Center in Harlan. Friends and relatives are invited to attend. A short program will be held at 2 p.m.    His children are Janis Dinesen, Harlan, and the late Melvin Dinesen; and David and Kim Havick, Altoona.

Jon Rasmussen, 71

    KIRKMAN -- Jon Weston Rasmussen, 71, Kirkman, died November 9 at Myrtue Medical Center.    Services will be held Monday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Kirkman with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Kirkman.  Visitation is Sunday, Nov. 13 from 5-7 p.m.

Helen Henderson, 104

    AVOCA -- Helen M. Henderson, 104, Avoca, formerly of Harlan, died Monday, Nov. 7 in Harlan.    No services are planned.  As per Helen’s wishes, her body was donated to Creighton University.    Henderson is survived by daughter Kay (Bill) Schechinger of Keller, TX; son Dr.

Ralph Sternhagen, 54

    HOLLAND -- Ralph J. Sternhagen, 54, Holland, died Sunday, Nov. 6 at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.    Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Grundy Center.  Visitation is Friday, Nov. 11 from 5-8 p.m.

Isabel Klein, 92

    HARLAN -- Isabel Klein, 92, Harlan, died November 7 at Elm Crest Assisted Living.    Services will be held Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  A wake service was held Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.  Visitation was Thursday from noon-8 p.m.

    HARLAN - For many years, the Shelby County Health Foundation has been dedicated to helping  support  health care resources that benefit patients and their families, employees, volunteers, and the communities they serve in Shelby County.

Warm weather means West Nile Virus remains a threat

    REGIONAL -- The Iowa State Hygienic Laboratory has confirmed 33 cases of West Nile virus this year, including the death of an elderly individual from NW Iowa in late October. This is twice the number of cases that were reported last year at this time.    The year 2016 has been a particularly prolific year for mosquitoes with the warm, wet summer that has transitioned into a warmer than normal fall.
