Arkfeld-Sellner will exchange June vows

PORTSMOUTH -- Bill and Brenda Arkfeld of Portsmouth announce the engagement of their daughter, Jennifer to Noah Sellner, Sleepy Eye, MN. He is the son of John and Vicki Sellner, Sleepy Eye.    The couple will exchange marriage vows on June 24 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth.

Graeve-Grafton plan wedding in Earling

    EARLING -- Kathy Graeve of Neola and Mel Graeve of Earling announce the engagement of their daughter Kathryn Elva to James W. “Don” Grafton, son of Jon and Kenne Grafton, Alexandria, LA.      The couple will marry May 19 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling.

Cyclone boys place third at competitive Ram Relays

 GLENWOOD -- Times came down and point totals went up for the Harlan Community boys track team as the Cyclones placed third in a field of eight at Monday’s Glenwood Ram Relays. Placing in 16 of 19 events and scoring twice in eight of 12 individual competitions, HCHS tallied 115.5 points to come in third behind Glenwood (189) and Atlantic (130.5). The host Rams dominated in the sprints and middle-distance races, winning six relays and 11 events

HCHS soccer girls win opener

 CRESTON -- The Harlan Community girls soccer team opened the 2017 season with a win on Tuesday, holding off the Creston Panthers 2-1 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play. HCHS took a 2-0 lead at halftime on Haley Arkfeld’s breakaway goal and a penalty kick by Jenna Brelje. The Cyclones were able to stave off several Panther attacks the rest of the way as junior goalie Kenzie Jones finished with 12 saves.

Schueman wins 400 hurdles gold at Audubon girls meet

 AUDUBON -- AHSTW’s Jaycie Schueman won the 400-meter hurdles by more than three seconds and took second place in the 100-meter hurdles Monday night at the Audubon Girls Early Bird Invite. Nearly a dozen schools attended the early-season outdoor meet, which did not tabulate team scores. Logan-Magnolia led the field by winning eight events. Competing outside for the first time this spring, AHSTW placed in seven of 19 events overall.

Vikings’ Clay sprints to three golds at Jerome Howe Relays

 TREYNOR -- Gage Clay won two individual sprints and also anchored AHSTW’s gold medal 4x200 relay here Monday night, leading the Viking boys to fifth place out of 16 teams at the Jerome Howe Relays in Treynor. Clay cruised to victory in both the 100 and 200-meter dash while teaming with Sam Peterson, Korbin Martin and Cordale Armstrong to win the 4x200 in 1:35.7. AHSTW placed 13 times in 12 events overall and scored 65 points.

Wolves place sixth at Lake City

 LAKE CITY -- The IKM-Manning boys track team scored 15 times in 12 events on its way to placing sixth at Monday’s Ink Wunderly Relays in Lake City. Madrid claimed the team title with 11 gold medals and 198.5 points, finishing well ahead of second-place South Central Calhoun (102) and third-place Kuemper (67.5). The Wolves scored 46.5 points, led by Grant Stracke and Hunter Behrens placing third and fourth, respectively, in the discus and Jare

Susan Buck, 64

    TENNANT -- Susan Elizabeth Buck, 64, Tennant, died April 4 at Scott and White Memorial Hospital.    Services will be held Wednesday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Church in Portsmouth with burial in the Shelby Cemetery at Shelby.  A rosary will be held Tuesday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at the church.  Visitation is Tuesday, April 11 from 5-8 p.m.
