Community Gardens Available

HARLAN – The area has been tilled and the City of Harlan is accepting applications for residents to plant in the city’s community garden.    Potential participants can inquire about the gardens at city hall.  The gardens are made possible by the city, Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Iowa State University Extension.    Plots are available for $20 for a 15x15-foot area.  The plots are located in the Dye Street Development are

ATLANTIC - Five HCHS students earned Hawkeye 10 recognition at the conference’s annual All-Academic Team and Character Awards banquet held in Atlantic Wed., April 5.

Portwood-Petersen will marry in May

NEBRASKA CITY, NE -- Audrey Portwood  of LaVista, NE and Cody Petersen of Harlan will marry on May 20 in a ceremony at the Lied Lodge and Conference Center in Nebraska City.    Parents of the couple are Rich and Karen Portwood, Hastings, NE and Jeff and Cyndi Petersen, Harlan.

Knudsen-Lansman

HARLAN -- Katrina Knudsen and Seth Lansman both of Harlan exchanged marriage vows on January 14, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Harlan. Chaplain TJ Carlson performed the 11:30 a.m. double ring ceremony.    Parents of the couple are Dan and Lorie Knudsen, Harlan; and Howard and Tara Lansman, Harlan. 

Steven Nichols, 46

    ELKHORN, NE -- Steven Stacy Nichols, 46, Elkhorn, NE, died Thursday, April 13 at his home.    Services will be held Tuesday, April 18 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Elkhorn with interment in the Prospect Hill Cemetery.  Visitation was Monday, April 17from noon-7:30 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Reichmuth Funeral Home in Elkhorn.  A Masonic Service was held at 5 p.m.

Pamela Ratigan, 73

    COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Pamela Jeanne Ratigan, 73, Council Bluffs, died April 15 at her home.    Services will be held Wednesday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m. at Corpus Christi Queen of Apostles Catholic Church with private inurnment at a later date at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Pamama.  Rosary recitation will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday followed by visitation until 8 p.m.

Duane Bissen, 66

    GRINNELL -- Duane M. Bissen, 66, Grinnell, died Tuesday, April 11 at his home.    Services will be held Tuesday, April 18 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell with interment in the Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.  Visitation will be held Monday, April 17 beginning at 2 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.  Family will receive friends from 4:30-7:30 p.m.  A scripture service will be held at 4 p.m.

Paul A. Pauley, 87

    COLLEGE STATION, TX -- Paul A. Pauley, 87, College Station, TX, died April 10 in College Station.    Services will be held Saturday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Visitation is Saturday from 10-11 a.m.

HOSA students qualify for nationals

HARLAN – Harlan Community High Schools HOSA (Future Health Professionals) students competed well at the state conference held in Des Moines last month, and have qualified for the national event to be held in Florida in June.    All students in attendance qualified for nationals, said instructor Nancy Osborn, and will head to the International Leadership conference and competition June 20-23 in Orlando at Coronado Springs Disney Resort.
