Pay attention to address markers

    COUNTY -- As spring cleaning time nears, and residents go about cleaning up the yard and sprucing up buildings, local emergency management officials are asking that they pay close attention to the address marker.    It should be bright and clearly visible from the road. Emergency responders, especially at  night, depend on highly visible house numbers, street signs and rural address markers to properly locate a residence.

Addressing childhood trauma in Shelby County

HARLAN -- A recent Iowa study linking childhood trauma to poor physical and mental health in adults has led to a new initiative in Shelby County.    Myrtue Medical Center is sponsoring a Community Educational on Tuesday, April 18 from 6-8 p.m. at C.G. Therkildsen Activity Ctr.

MMC Board approves perioperative dept. capital request, HVAC controls upgrade

HARLAN -- The Myrtue Medical Center’s Perioperative Department’s capital request and the hospital’s HVAC controls upgrade proposal have both been approved by the Myrtue Medical Center Board of Trustees.    The board approved $195,000 for perioperative capital spending with $145,000 in equipment purchased.

Start date for HCS in the fall will be Aug. 23

HARLAN – The Harlan Community Schools Board of Education has approved a final draft of the 2017-18 school calendar, with Wednesday, Aug.

Miller Orthopedic to provide hospital surgical procedures

HARLAN -- Beginning the first week in April, three specialists from Miller Orthopedic Specialists (Council Bluffs/Omaha) will conduct weekly clinic and surgical procedures at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Dr. Roy Abraham, Dr. Daniel Larose and Dr. Huy Trinh will conduct weekly clinics while Dr. C.

Rodney Vanderheiden, 62

    BEDFORD -- Services for Rodney Vanderheiden, 62, Bedford, will be Saturday, April 8 at 10 a.m. at the Bedford New Life Missionary Church.    Visitation will be Friday, April 7 at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford from 3-7 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m.  Interment will be in the Harlan Cemetery at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Betty Jean Adams, 85

    KIRKMAN -- Betty Jean (Johannsen) Adams, 85, Kirkman, died March 30.    A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, April 29 from 2-4 p.m. at the Kirkman Center in Kirkman.    Adams is survived by her husband, Rex G. Adams; sons Rex A. (Cindy) Adams and Jay B. (Roxanne) Adams; grandchildren Alison (Don Cook), Rex C. (Angela), Aaron, Quinn, Arianna and Elise Adams; six great-grandchildren; other family and friends. 

Martha Ann Anastasi, 83

    HARLAN -- Martha Ann Anastasi, 83, Harlan, died March 31 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services will be held Saturday, June 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Family will greet friends that Saturday from 9-11 a.m.

Connie Moeller, 71

    ELK HORN -- Connnie Ann Moeller, 71, Elk Horn, died April 1 at the Salem Lutheran Home.    Services will be held Friday, April 7 at 10:30 a.m. at Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn with burial in the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation was held Thursday, April 6 from 5-7 p.m.
