HARLAN -- The racing season roars into action this weekend with the opening night at the Shelby County Speedway in Harlan.    Under the promoting team of Highbanks Promotions LLC, Doug and Robin Batz and Denny and Mary Petersen, the season opener is set for Saturday, April 29.    Classes during the 2017 season will include modified, late model, stock car, sport mods, hobby stock and sport compact. 

Harlan again receives Tree City USA award

DES MOINES – The City of Harlan was recently honored with the 2016 Tree City USA Award at the 27th Annual Community Forestry Awards Luncheon in Des Moines.

Area athletes qualify five events for Drake Relays

 DES MOINES -- Area track and field athletes have qualified five events - four individual and one relay - for the 2017 Drake Relays in Des Moines later this week. The list of local qualifiers includes three entries for the Harlan Community girls team and one each for the HCHS and AHSTW boys.

Streit punches likely ticket to Drake in the discus

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- An off day in the shot put only served as motivation when it came time for Gillian Streit to throw the discus at Tuesday’s Lewis Central Co-Ed Track Meet. Three spins later, the Harlan Community senior had all but locked up a coveted spot in next week’s Drake Relays. With absolutely zero help from the wind, Streit launched her three best discus throws of the season in succession - all more than 120 feet - during the second f

HCHS tennis girls score 9-0 win

 AUDUBON -- The Harlan Community girls tennis team picked up their first meet win of the season on Thursday, April 13, scoring a 9-0 victory at Audubon. All nine varsity matches were decided by scores of 8-0, 8-1, 8-2 or 8-3. The 8-0 decisions were recorded by Nicole Lange in singles play as well as the doubles team of Lexie Bruns and Taylor Andersen. HCHS also won two out of three junior varsity matches.

Viking boys improve to 4-0

 AVOCA -- The AHSTW boys soccer team picked up a pair of hard-fought home wins earlier this week, improving to 4-0 overall with victories of 3-1 over St. Albert Monday and 2-1 over Treynor on Tuesday. AHSTW 3, St. Albert 1 - Senior Preslyn Grobe scored a pair of goals and sophomore Kyle Branan added another as the Vikings notched an impressive non-conference win on Monday.

Cyclone golfers place fourth vs. strong Spencer Invite field

 SPENCER -- All six of Harlan Community’s golfers shot under 90 and finished in the top half of the field as the Cyclones placed fourth out of 13 teams at Monday’s Spencer Boys Golf Invitational. HCHS junior Kevin Campbell scored a 37 on the back nine and finished with a 5-over-par round of 77 to tie for eighth place out of 74 players in the field and earn a medal.
