Arkfeld scores hat trick in 4-2 victory

 MISSOURI VALLEY -- Following a scoreless first half, Haley Arkfeld’s penalty kick in the 51st minute sparked the Harlan Community girls soccer team to a 4-2 victory at Missouri Valley on Monday, April 17. Arkfeld finished with a hat trick on Mo. Valley’s brand new regulation-width turf field, scoring her second goal in the 54th minute (assisted by Kylee Hinz) and adding a third goal in the 76th minute.

William Greiner, 85

    PANAMA -- William Edwin Greiner, 85, Panama, died April 27 at his home.    Services will be held Tuesday, May 2 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church in Panama with burial in the St. Mary’s Cemetery at Panama.  A wake service was held Monday, May 1 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Parish Center in Panama.  Visitation was Monday from noon-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 4-8 p.m.

WALLEYE SEASON

HARLAN – Fishing enthusiasts will soon be able to pull out some walleye from Prairie Rose Lake thanks to a stocking program that has released 200,000 walleye fry into the lake this spring.    Bryan Hayes, fisheries biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, said the fry were put into the lake last week with hopes that they will survive and thrive in the lake.  Because they are so small, it’s hoped that up to 2,000 will survive, b

HARLAN – Persons under the age of 18 won’t be allowed to remain in a Harlan business that primarily serves alcohol for consumption on-site after 9 p.m.

Foss Drake Relays long jump champion

DES MOINES -- Harlan Community Junior Nick Foss is a Drake Relays Champion!    Foss’s jump of 21 feet 6 1/4 inches earned top honors at the Relays held last week and weekend.    Foss is the first boys Drake Relays champion since Steve Wegner won the shot put back in 2000 and 2001, and the first HCHS champion since the girls 4x400 relay team took first place in 2005. 

Cheese sandwich, carrots, milk for students with negative school lunch balance

HARLAN -- The Harlan Community Schools made an announcement last week regarding students who have negative lunch balances.    “Beginning May 1, anyone with a negative lunch balance of $10.00 or more will be given a cheese sandwich, carrots, and a carton of white milk.
