    HARLAN -- Crews from Suez Water Advanced Solutions are performing an annual five point inspection of the water tower at Cyclone Avenue and Highway 59. In the process, the tank will be power washed outside to remove mildew and the paint refreshed.

Celebrating “86”

Playing volleyball over telephone lines.    This is what life looked like for Norma “Jeanie” Kiesel when she was growing up as a teenager in Avoca during the 1940s. These were the times when her classmates didn’t have cars and she wasn’t allowed to wear pants to school. 

Kenkels make Iowa tradition a family “A-Fair”

REGIONAL -- Max Kenkel and his niece, Brylie, discovered something special in late July: both of them would be performing at the Iowa State Fair – on the same day – just a few hours apart.    Brylie, who turns eight today, Tuesday, August 8, earned an early birthday present by placing second in her age bracket during the Shelby County Fair in Harlan for her solo jazz dance performance.

Community Chest accepting applications for funding

COUNTY -- Non-profit agencies within Shelby County will have until the end of August to complete applications for funding from Shelby County Community Chest. Funds from SCCC are made possible by the generosity of local donors to the SCCC annual fund drive which will be taking place this fall.    Shelby County Community Chest accumulates and then disburses the funds from this campaign to local non-profits for a single year.

Renz-Hazen will marry in September

MAGNOLIA -- Melissa Renz of Harlan and Jacub Hazen of Magnolia will exchange marriage vows on September 9 in an outdoor ceremony at the Hazen farm in Magnolia. 

Card shower will help Margaret Feldman celebrate

HARLAN -- Margaret M. Feldman of Harlan will observe her 95th birthday on August 17. Her family is planning a card shower in her honor. Cards will reach her if sent to 2108 12th Street, Apt. 261, Harlan, IA 51537. 

Sears selected for IHSBCA All-Star Series

 DES MOINES -- Harlan Community senior shortstop Dillon Sears has been selected to play in the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Series in the Des Moines metro area. Games will be held August 3-6 at Waukee, Johnston and Ankeny. Sears will play for the Small Schools West squad, which will play Large Schools West on Thursday, Aug.

Sears brothers lead cast of five area baseball all-staters

 DES MOINES -- Led by repeat first-team selection Dillon Sears, four players from Harlan Community and one from Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton have been named to the Iowa Newspaper Association’s 2017 All-State Baseball teams released on Tuesday, August 1. A committee of INA writers selected first, second and third teams for classes 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A, also naming four senior captains. This year’s HCHS all-state baseball players include 3A first-team

Camp of Champions kicks off Cyclone football season

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community football team’s annual Cyclone Camp of Champions is being held this week (July 31-August 4) at Merrill Field in preparation for the 2017 season. According to HCHS head coach Curt Bladt, the varsity camp for grades 10-12 included 65 players as of Tuesday’s session.
