Shelby County man sentenced for child pornography

COUNCIL BLUFFS -- On August 11, Colton James Klein, 22, Harlan, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Stephanie M. Rose to 120 months in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release for receipt of child pornography, announced United States Attorney Kevin E.

Exira-EHK proposing $3.9 million bond issue

ELK HORN -- A $3.9 million general obligation school bond will be on the ballot for Sept. 12 in Elk Horn and Exira.    The bond would be used to make repairs and improvements to the Elk Horn and Exira school campuses which were originally built in the 1950s.

Klindt-Pitkin will wed in August ceremony

BRECKENRIDGE, CO -- Dusten Klindt and Ben Pitkin both of Loveland, CO will wed on August 20 in a ceremony at Breckenridge Ski Resort in Breckenridge.    Parents of the couple are Dean and Julie Klindt, Harlan; and Kevin and Ruth Pitkin, Harlan.

Eunice Goetzinger, 86

    NEVADA -- Eunice Josephine Goetzinger, 86, Nevada, formerly of Defiance, died August 12 at Story County Senior Care.    Services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance with burial in the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery at Defiance.    A rosary will be held Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.  Visitation is Tuesday from 6-8 p.m.

PANAMA -- The most traumatizing moments of your life can lead you to some of the happiest.    At least, this is the case for Dave Velthoff of Panama.    Velthoff originally had no desire to come to Shelby County.

Turning Day Into Night

REGIONAL -- On August 21st, a total solar eclipse will be turning day to night for 14 states in the nation.    The coast-to-coast event is being called the “national eclipse” as it is the first total eclipse to exclusively span over the U.S. mainland since the nation’s founding in 1776. It is the first to be witnessed in the U.S.

Harlan Community Schools kicks off year August 23

HARLAN --  Students can again enjoy an extra week of summer this year before heading back to classes as Harlan Community School District prepares for a new school year.    The first day of school for the 2017-2018 school year at Harlan Community Schools will be on Wednesday, Aug. 23.    Parents and guardians should be aware that the 23rd and 24th will both have a two hour early dismissal.

HMU bids are $1.3 million less than estimates

HARLAN -- For upcoming major projects, Harlan Municipal Utilities accepted bids that came in over $1.3-million less than engineer’s estimates.      The projects, including final overhead to underground on electric lines, fiber to home connections, and substation switchgear work, had pleasing results on bids opened recently and formally approved at the Aug.
