Never too early to talk about Christmas

HARLAN – Most Shelby Countians would admit they are thinking more about fall colors, the harvest and Halloween decorations these days instead of Christmas trees, lighting ceremonies, hot cocoa and Santa Claus.    But that’s not the case for Harlan’s Christmas Light Celebration Committee, now in its second year, which is gearing up to build on a successful first effort a year ago to once again make the community a sea of lights and decorations

PORTSMOUTH -- Jennifer Arkfeld of Harlan and Noah Sellner of Sleepy Eye, MN exchanged marriage vows on June 24, 2017 at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Coach Bladt’s Climb to 400

 Nearly midway through his 40th season as Harlan Community’s head football coach, Curt Bladt joined exclusive company Friday night by picking up his 400th career win as the Cyclones defeated Glenwood 17-14. Only two other Iowa prep football coaches, according to the Iowa High School Athletic Association, have reached the 400-win mark. Goodwin, Nelson star in Spartan win

 ELK HORN -- Jayden Goodwin had a break out offensive performance with 126 rushing yards and two touchdowns last Friday night and also intercepted two passes on defense as the Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton football team evened its record at .500 with a 41-6 Homecoming win vs. Essex. The Spartans are now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in 8-Player, District 7.

Volleyball: AHSTW tops Tigers

 AVOCA (Sept. 14) -- Kate Wise put down 15 kills and Kinsey Scheffler added 10 here Thursday night as AHSTW handled Griswold in a four-set Western Iowa Conference volleyball match, 25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 25-19. The Lady Vikes improved to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the WIC and also went 3-1 at the West Harrison Tournament on Saturday. Collectively, AHSTW had a kill efficiency of .201 and served 87.5 percent with 10 aces against the Tigers.
