    SYRACUSE, NE -- Denise A. Wellensiek, 64, Syracuse, NE, died October 11.  She was formerly of Harlan.    She is survived by her husband, Karl Wellensiek; son Eric Wellensiek; mother Arlene Warner; sister Beverly Courtney and husband, Ray; brothers Dennis Warner and wife Linda and Allan Warner and wife Linda.    Services will be held Saturday, Oct. 14 at 11:30 a.m.

Rogene DeMarce, 53

    ROME, NY -- Rogene (Fiscus) DeMarce, 53, Rome, NY, formerly of Harlan, died Friday, Oct. 6 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, NY.    Graveside services will be held Saturday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m.

City will auction off industrial park property

HARLAN – The City of Harlan will auction off a parcel of land in the industrial park on Monday, Oct. 16, with a public hearing on the possible sale the next day at a regular meeting of the Harlan City Council Tuesday, Oct. 17.    The move comes following discussion earlier this month about the land, which has two interested parties. 

Settlement reached in civil case against former physician

HARLAN – A former Harlan physician, who was convicted last year of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse and indecent contact with a child, has reached a settlement with a victim in Shelby County District Court, prior to a full trial in the case.    An order in district court filed October 9 indicate the parties, the plaintiff identified as Jane Doe 1 and defendant as Wing Tai Fung, M.D., informed the court they had reached a settlement. 

HCHS Marching Band ready to perform at state contest

HARLAN – The Harlan Community High School Marching Band is gearing up to perform at state contest this weekend, and hopes are to earn a Division I rating.    State contest will be held at Glenwood High School on Saturday, Oct.

COUNTY -- Protect yourself, your family and community this season with an annual flu vaccine for everyone in your family who is 6 months and older.    This fall, Myrtue Medical Center’s Department of Public Health is partnering with the Iowa Immunization Coalition to host an Ayzlee’s Flu Clinic in Harlan.    This clinic will be held on October 13 from 4-7 p.m. at the Community Health Building at 2712 12th Street.

Muell-Yeager will wed in October ceremony

    DES MOINES -- Christina Muell and LeMar Yeager both of Des Moines will exchange marriage vows on October 28 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Des Moines.    Parents of the couple are Deb and Dan Muell, Portsmouth, and the late Justina Holt, who was a Des Moines resident.

Baughman-Kaufman

KIRKMAN -- Dena Baughman and Jon Kaufman both of Dubuque were married on June 17, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Kirkman. The 3:30 p.m. double ring ceremony was performed by Pastor Laurie Riley.    Parents of the couple are Jim and Lori Baughman, Kirkman; and Mark and Sherry Kaufman, Harlan.     

Cyclones outlast Huskies in rain-soaked thriller

 WINTERSET -- It wasn’t all that pretty, but the Harlan Community football team will take it. Held scoreless for the final three quarters on a slick, rain-soaked field, the 8th-ranked (3A) Cyclones overcame a third-quarter downpour and tenacious opponent to escape Winterset with a 7-6 victory Friday night. A sixth straight win improved HCHS to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in District 7, good enough for sole possession of first place.
