O’Neill’s 256 breaks record as HCHS girls improve to 3-1

 HARLAN (Dec. 17) -- The Harlan Community girls bowling team will take a 3-1 record into the holiday break while the boys are 1-3 following recent home meets against Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln and Denison-Schleswig. The HCHS girls defeated AL by 413 pins on Monday, Dec. 14, winning 2385-1972.

Cyclones finish 2-3 at tough Al Garrison Dual Tournament

 WAUKEE (Dec. 19) -- The Harlan Community wrestling team finished with a 2-3 record and placed fourth out of six teams at last Saturday’s Al Garrison Dual Tournament in Waukee. HCHS lost to Ballard (48-33) and third-ranked (Class 3A) Waukee (70-6) to start the day, then picked up wins over Sioux City North (54-24) and Ottumwa (43-36) before losing its final dual 45-26 vs.

Collins wins title at 113 as Vikings place sixth in WIC

 UNDERWOOD (Dec. 19) -- Freshman Eli Collins won the 113-pound championship and Garrison Gettler was a runner-up at 160 last Saturday to lead AHSTW to a sixth-place team finish in the Western Iowa Conference Wrestling Tournament at Underwood. Logan-Magnolia won the WIC title by a 210-203 margin over Missouri Valley while Underwood placed third with 152 points.

Recycling locations could close

    COUNTY – Rural residents are in danger of having their regional drop-off recycling buildings removed due to improper usage by the public.    Shelby County Engineer Brandon Burmeister said the county has recycling buildings in Portsmouth, Irwin and Earling, but officials are considering removing them from service.    “They have become nothing but a dump ground for people to throw their garbage,” Burmeister said.  “I am afraid that the compa

HCHS wrestlers sweep Cardinals and Mustangs

 HARLAN (Dec. 17) -- A dramatic rally in one dual and a rout in the next. The Harlan Community wrestling team was on the winning side of both here Thursday night, sweeping a home double dual against Clarinda, 34-32, and Shenandoah, 66-6. HCHS improved to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in Hawkeye Ten Conference duals while Clarinda finished with the same record after opening the meet with a 48-6 win over Shenandoah.

Timely 10-0 run lets Cyclones take down No. 9 Rams

 HARLAN (Dec. 19) -- A 10-0 run is always nice, but few are as perfectly timed as Harlan Community’s was Saturday. With the scored tied 27-all and points at a premium, Cyclone point guard Brad Curren finished the third quarter with a hanging jump shot near the lane.

Lady Vikes win big

 MISSOURI VALLEY (Dec. 18) -- The AHSTW girls outscored Missouri Valley 21-2 in the first quarter and 19-2 in the third Friday night, rolling past the winless Lady Reds 65-22 in Western Iowa Conference action. The Lady Vikes, now 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the WIC, were led by senior Kailey Jones’ 23 points (8-of-13 shooting), seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks.

Vikings improve to 8-0

 AVOCA (Dec. 19) -- The AHSTW boys basketball team improved to 8-0 over the weekend, winning at Missouri Valley 69-38 on Friday night and topping Council Bluffs St. Albert 63-60 on Saturday afternoon in Avoca.
