Final Superintendent Interviews Thursday

    HARLAN -- Interviews of the three finalists for the Harlan Community Schools superintendent position will be held Thursday, Feb. 11 in Harlan.    Interview teams will start at 11 a.m. and run through roughly 7 p.m., with a school board meeting holding a closed session meeting following at 7:30 p.m.  Each candidate also will be offered a building and community tour on Thursday.    Finalists include Dr.

Weddings - Brandon and Amanda Kew

    HARLAN -- Amanda Petersen and Brandon Kew both of Omaha exchanged marriage vows on October 17, 2020 in an outdoor ceremony at the Harlan Golf and Country Club. Pastor Kirk Petersen, father of the bride, performed the 4 p.m. double ring ceremony.    Parents of the bride are Kirk and Christine Petersen, Harlan.

    HARLAN -- Pre-schoolers at the Shelby County Catholic School got the chance Friday to try out their snow shoeing skills.    Shelby County and Iowa Department of Natural Resources Naturalist Christina Roelofs said she brings the program to the area schools for exercise, fun, and to show students how important it would be to have snowshoes in an area that gets lots of snow.    “It’s great exercise,” she said.

Vaccines for 75 and older begin

    COUNTY --  Educators and persons aged 75 and older are receiving their first COVID-19 vaccinations this week as local public health officials said Phase 1B of the vaccination program is getting under way in Shelby County.    Phase 1B of the COVID-19 vaccine began last week in Iowa.

Cyclones split double dual vs. Panthers, Titans

 HARLAN (Jan. 28) -- The Harlan Community wrestlers completed their regular dual season Thursday with a Senior Night split against Creston/Orient-Macksburg and Lewis Central. Creston/O-M won the meet by defeating LC 81-0 and beating HCHS 55-19. The Cyclones finished the night with a 66-3 victory over the short-handed Titans. HCHS (15-7 overall) tied Atlantic for fourth place in the Hawkeye Ten dual standings at 7-3.

Cyclone girls bowlers rally past OABCIG

 IDA GROVE (Jan. 21) -- The Harlan Community girls bowling team used a Baker games rally to defeat OABCIG by 18 pins last Thursday while the Cyclone boys lost their dual to the Falcons by a margin of 345. HCHS won the girls meet 2,341 to 2,323 despite OABCIG boasting the top two individual scores of the day as Amber Hoefling rolled a 435 (244-191) and Kylee Dausel had a 342 (181-161).

HCHS places ninth at tough Bishop Heelan Wrestling Invitational

 SIOUX CITY (Jan. 23) -- Led by second-place finishes from Zane Bendorf, Jesse Schwery and Jeremiah Davis, Harlan Community came in ninth out of 12 teams at the Bishop Heelan Wrestling Invite last Saturday. Grand Island (Nebraska) led the field with 197 points and five individual champs, followed by Norfolk in second place with 177.5 points and Logan-Magnolia in third with 164.
