Harlan Comm. Theatre to present Beauty and the Beast

    HARLAN – Auditions for the Harlan Community Theatre’s summer production of Beauty and the Beast will be held Monday-Tuesday, May 3-4 at 6:30 p.m. at Harlan Community High School.    The musical marks the return of the Harlan Community Theatre following a year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

HMU implements Water Watch

    HARLAN – Due to reduced production in its well fields, the Harlan Municipal Utilities (HMU) is implementing a Water Watch effective this week and until further notice.  HMU is asking customers to take the following measures regarding potable water (water supplied by HMU):    •  No watering of lawns, shrubs, trees, flower or vegetable gardens between the hours of 8 a.m.-8 p.m.    •  No washing of streets, parking lots, driveways, sidewalks

HCS receives $2.2 million in ESSER funds

    HARLAN – The Harlan Community Schools (HCS) learned last week that it will receive an additional $1,451,851 in funding through the federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER).    This, combined with $646,457, $124,739, and $64,000 in earlier federal relief funds, brings the total stimulus funding brought in to the school district to $2,287,047.    Officials said the funding is being distributed to districts throug

    HARLAN -- Bill Bruce Stockwell, 80, Harlan, died April 28 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services were held Saturday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m.

Gretchen Perry, 77

    OMAHA, NE -- Gretchen Ann (Von Eschen) Perry, 77, Omaha, NE, formerly of Harlan, died February 1 at her Omaha home.      A celebration of life will be held in her childhood town of Shelby at the community center on Friday,  May 7 from 5-7 p.m.

Keith Kimmen, 61

    HARLAN -- Keith “Louie” Kimmen, 61, Harlan, died April 19 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Visitation is Tuesday, May 4 from 5-7 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.    Kimmen is survived by sons Kayle Kimmen and Dylan (Lynn) Kimmen of Harlan; grandchildren Kamden Kimmen, Kobe Kimmen, Avery Kimmen and Hayden Kimmen; and sister Cindy (Curt) Scheffler of Harlan.

Auditor pushes for openness after challenge over meeting minutes

Well rehabilitation in coming months

    HARLAN -- Work could begin as early as late May or early June on the rehabilitating of three water wells owned by the Harlan Municipal Utilities followed by three more wells being restored in the next fiscal year.    The HMU Board of Trustees approved a proposal Thursday, April 22 from Cahoy Pump Service, Sumner, IA, for the three well project at a cost of $49,800. This required a budget amendment to the current fiscal year.
