Lt. Gov. Gregg tours Harlan bldg. project

    HARLAN – Iowa Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg was in Harlan Monday afternoon, Oct. 4 and took a tour of a downtown building that is currently nearing renovation completion courtesy of a state catalyst grant.  More in the NA.

The CO2 Pipeline

    HARLAN – Local farmland owners speaking Wednesday, Oct. 6 in regards to a proposed carbon dioxide-capture pipeline project that would make its way through Shelby County expressed some skepticism and genuine concerns over safety and financial considerations should the project move forward.    Approximately 150 local residents, and some not from this area of the state, packed into the C.G.

Lana Eagen, 79

    MASON CITY -- Lana Jean Eagen, 79, Mason City, formerly of Harlan, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2021, at the Good Shepherd Health Center.    Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oc. 13 at the First United Methodist Church with interment in the Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield.

Caroline Esser, 97

    LOGAN -- Caroline Esser 97, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021 in Logan.  Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Logan.  Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9 at the church.Arrangements made by Logan Memorial Chapel.

Lady Vikes fall to Underwood in five-set thriller

 AVOCA (Sept. 28) -- The AHSTW volleyball team continues to search for that big signature win in the Western Iowa Conference. The Lady Vikes appeared to be on their way Tuesday night, taking two of the first three sets vs. Underwood and leading most of the fifth and deciding “Race to 15.” Senior Natalie Hagadon’s booming 27th kill tied set five at 12-12 and seemed to give AHSTW the momentum it needed.

Volleyball: Tigers sweep HCHS

 RED OAK (Sept. 28) -- Harlan Community suffered its fourth straight Hawkeye Ten Conference volleyball loss on Tuesday night, recording zero ace serves and no blocks in a 25-17, 25-9, 25-17 defeat at Red Oak. The Cyclones, who have now lost eight of their last 10 matches, fell to 12-14 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Petersen, Kingery carry Spartans past Bedford 37-30

 EXIRA (Sept. 24) -- Junior quarterback Trey Petersen passed for 321 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for 143 yards and a 50-yard score last Friday night as the Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton football team outlasted Bedford 37-30 in an 8-Player non-district game. The Spartans improved to 3-2 overall with the win while the Bulldogs dropped to 2-3. The game was close throughout.

Myrtue bringing nuclear medicine testing in-house

    HARLAN – Myrtue Medical Center will soon provide its nuclear medicine testing in-house, following approval by the MMC Board of Trustees to build out a space in the lower level of the physician’s clinic and purchase the needed equipment.    For years Myrtue has shared with hospitals in Red Oak and Atlantic via a group called the Health Partners of Southwest Iowa for a mobile nuclear medicine machine transported by semi-truck and trailer bet
