Exira-EHK TAG students build GaGa Ball for fitness

    ELK HORN -- The Exira-EHK sophomore TAG students’ project including selling May Day Baskets to the K-12 students during the last school year. They wanted to give back by creating a healthy fitness activity for the elementary students. They came up with the GaGa Ball which involves a large octagon pit made out of wood and a ball.      Gaga Ball is a great game to play actively with many kids at recess.

Harlan FFA Places third at Southwest Iowa FFA District Soil Judging Contest; Silver Rating at State

    HARLAN -- Five students from the Harlan FFA Chapter competed in the Southwest Iowa District FFA Soil Judging Competition on Monday, September 27. The competition was held at the Iowa State University Armstrong Research Farm near Lewis, Iowa. The district team consisting of Marissa Schmidt, Joseph Bragg, Emily Schechinger, and Teya Frohlich placed 3rd out of 29 teams, qualifying them for the Iowa State FFA Soil Judging Competition.

Gross named National Merit commended student

    HARLAN -- Elizabeth L. Gross, a senior student at Harlan Community High School, has been named a commended student in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.    HCHS Principal Scott Frohlich made the announcement this week.    A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, will be presented to Gross.

USDA grant could provide for street improvements

New Dream Playground project conceptualized

    HARLAN – The City of Harlan has signed off on a professional services agreement with Snyder Associates to develop a master plan for a new, updated Dream Playground on the west side of Pioneer Park to replace the current structure that has outlived its life span.    The Harlan City Council has teamed with Snyder, at a cost of $22,800, to start the process toward a new developed playground area.  City officials said the service agreement is

    HARLAN -- Victoria Station in Harlan has won the 19th annual contest for Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin 2021, presented by the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) and managed by its restaurant and food service committee.    “That’s pretty good for a prime rib joint,” joked Richard Buman, who bought the restaurant 18 months ago with his wife, Angela.  “We are so excited just to have been nominated and to advance into the top 40.

Lady Vikes finish WIC play with two home wins
