    IRWIN -- Gene C. Borkowski, 90, Irwin, died Wednesday, Oct. 6 at his home.    Services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 2:30 p.m.

Kristine Schmitz, 54

    HARLAN -- Kristine Schmitz, 54, Harlan, died Monday, Oct. 4.    Services were held Saturday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.

Gary Sanders, 81

    HARLAN -- Gary Sanders, 81, Harlan, formerly of Spencer, NE, died October 6.    Services were held Monday, Oct. 11.    Sanders is survived by daughter Tina (Bruce) Christensen of Harlan; granddaughters and families Tabitha (Jason) Ludwig of Auburn, Tammi (Matt) Thompson of Nebraska City, NE, Ashley (Paul) Bruck of Harlan, and Alison (Shane) King of Breda; and 12 great-grandchildren.

HCHS students selected for National Honor Society

    HARLAN -- Five new seniors and 16 juniors were inducted into the Harlan Community High School Alpha Beta Chi Chapter of the National Honor Society on Sunday, Oct. 3 at the HCHS auditorium.

Iowa Master Farmers

From Staff Reports    HARLAN -- Ron and Maria Rosmann, Harlan, have been named Iowa Master Farmers by Wallaces Farmer Magazine and the Iowa Master Farmer Association.    Five Iowa farm families were honored September 13 in Ames.

Knudsen inducted into 4-H Hall of Fame

    HARLAN – Lorie Knudsen, Harlan, was honored at the Iowa State Fair August 22, inducted into the 2021 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.    Knudsen was named the Shelby County nominee during the Shelby County Fair in July, and joined 98 others in Iowa inducted during ceremonies at the Iowa State Fair.    Knudsen grew up on a farm outside of Walnut.

Larsen’s Pub, Victoria Station finalists for best tenderloin

    COUNTY -- Larsen’s Pub in Elk Horn and Victoria Station in Harlan are among the five finalists in the Iowa Pork Producers Association’s Iowa Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin Contest.    Other finalists include Old Road Cafe & Bar in Emerson, Z’s Eatery and Draught Haus in Indianola and Stalker’s Pub in Miles.    Larsen’s Pub was a 2007 winner in the contest.

Kasperbauer breaks two school records in Cyclone win

ADEL -- Harlan Community QB Teagon Kasperbauer set two single-game school records Friday night with 432 passing yards and 7 TD passes in the Cyclones' 58-30 win at ADM. Joey Moser, Connor Frame & Aidan Hall all surpassed 100 yards receiving as No. 1 HCHS improved to 7-0. Frame led the way with three TD receptions and also picked up an ADM onside kick and returned it 49 yards to the house.
