Vikings punch ticket to 2A-7 Championship game

STUART – The AHSTW Vikings didn’t underestimate the Van Meter Bulldogs and controlled the game from start to finish Tuesday night winning 64-49 to earn a chance to play for the 2A-7 Championship. Senior Brayden Lund led the way with 20 points.

Cyclones eliminate Titans in first round victory

In a game that was back-and-forth for three quarters, the Cyclones pulled ahead for good in the fourth quarter en route to a 54-43 first round tournament victory over their rival, the Lewis Central Titans. Junior Franz Reisz led the way for the Cyclones with 15 points.
“It’s always good to beat LC,” Reisz said. “We just came out and kind of started off flat, but we just got over the hump and played really well.”

HCHS 8th graders head to DC

 HARLAN — Several eighth-graders from Harlan Community Middle School saw the sights in Washington, D.C. this past week.

Chamber of Commerce hosts Run for the Roses

Following dinner, guests played 50/50 Heads or Tails and Generational Trivia, followed by the awards ceremony.

Monson selected as a 2023 Great Iowa Nurse

    Staff Reports    HARLAN – Michele Monson, RNC-OB, manager of Myrtue’s Birthing Center, was selected as one of the Great Iowa Nurses for 2023 for routinely going above and beyond to ensure safe, compassionate nursing care.    “I am honored to receive the Great Iowa Nurse award. All Great Iowa Nurses are surrounded by other great nurses,” Monson said.

Meyer named CEO of Producers Livestock Marketing Association

HARLAN —  Producers Livestock Marketing Association, based in Omaha, Neb., announced that Tim Meyer has been named as its new CEO. Meyer will be succeeding Rick Keith, who will be retiring on February 20.    Meyer, a native of a Holstein family farm and long time Harlan resident, has been with the firm since 2012 and serving 10 years as the Senior V.P. of their Producers Livestock Credit Corp. division.

Cyclones get eliminated by Lions on road

The HCHS girls varsity basketball team’s playoff journey has come to an end with a devastating road loss to the Des Moines Christian Lions in the Class 3A Regional Tourament finals game.
“We were so proud of them,” said Cyclones Head Coach Zach Klaassen. “We started 0-2 on the season and to be one game away from the state tournament is pretty special. Not a lot of teams get to experience that.”

McMahon will turn 90 March 4

IRWIN — Richard (Pudge) McMahon of Irwin will turn 90 March 4, 2023. Pudge played piano for the Earl Russell Orchestra and the Keytones for dances, country clubs and parties at the Chicken Hut. A card shower is requested to commemorate his birthday.  HARLAN — Joan Sondag will celebrate her 95th birthday March 2, 2023. The family would like to honor her with a card shower.

Spartans advance to next round of tournament

The Exira-EHK girls varsity basketball team punched their ticket to the Regionals Finals of tournament play pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 63-47 victory over the Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders Friday night at home.
“It’s very fortunate to be honest with you,” said Spartans Head Coach Tom Petersen. “We didn’t play well whatsoever and just had a very uncharacteristic night.”
