After finishing its 2022 season with an 11-19 record, the HCHS volleyball team is ready for the new season to begin, starting with a scrimmage at home against the Carroll Tigers Aug. 22.

Wolves prepare for new volleyball season

After a tough 2-23 finish to their 2022 campaign, the IKM-Manning Wolves volleyball team is ready to get back on the court and start fresh with a new season.
“It’s always great to get back in the gym,” said Wolves Head Coach McKaylie Croghan. “I love watching the girls grow year to year not just with their volleyball skills, but also their leadership.”

Spartans prepare for new football season

After finishing 4-4 during their 2022 campaign, the Exira-EHK Spartans are ready to get back on the field behind a new quarterback.
“I think we’re super excited,” said Spartans Head Coach Drew Buckholdt. “The kids have put in a ton of work since May in the summertime with the weight room, so the kids are pretty excited with the work they’ve put in.”

Shelby County Extension and Outreach plans Farmland Leasing meeting in Harlan on August 10

SHELBY COUNTY — The Iowa State University Shelby County Extension and Outreach office will host a meeting on August 10, beginning at 10:00 a.m. with doors open at 9:30 a.m. The location is at the Shelby County Extension office located at 906 6th Street.

Coach Bladt, Hall and Leinen on Shrine Bowl South Team

CEDAR FALLS — The 51st Iowa Shrine Bowl was held Saturday July 22, 2023 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.Coach Todd Bladt, Aidan Hall and Stephen Leinen all participated in the weeklong activities put on by the Iowa Shrine Bowl organization which included Shriner’s hospital presentations, interactive activities with some Shriner’s kids, as well as practices for the game and some fun outings for the players and coaches.

Harlan Community School District will welcome students back August 23

The district has released the following information for the upcoming school year.RegistrationAll Preschool - 12th grade registration will be completed by mail. Materials may be returned by mail or placed in drop boxes located outside the student’s principal’s office. Supply lists are located on the district website.

Cyclones football prepares to go for three-peat

In three weeks, the HCHS Cyclones will prepare to defend back-to-back state championships starting with a battle against the Lewis Central Titans Aug. 25.

Backpack Program helps 162 students with school supplies

SHELBY COUNTY — Shelby County Community Outreach (SCCO) held its backpack distribution Thursday to provide school supplies for children in need. This program has been going on for over ten years. Distribution was at Fresh Encounter Church, and the FEC Women assisted in distribution. This year, the program was able to donate to 62 families, with 169 backpacks being distributed. In the backpacks are tissues and disinfectant wipes.

Myrtue’s parent networks offers new and expectant parents support and learning

HARLAN — Myrtue Medical Center hosts a “parent network” night twice a month on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m.
