HCHS girls rout Atlantic

 ATLANTIC -- The Harlan Community girls tennis team picked up its first dual win of the year on Monday, improving to 1-4 with a 9-0 victory over Atlantic. HCHS senior Jessica DuVal won the number-one singles match 8-0 over Jena Brosam while Cyclones Maggie McGrath and Nicole Lange both won 8-1. Every other match was decided by an 8-2, 8-3 or 8-4 margin.

Atlantic, Kuemper top Cyclone girls golfers

 REGIONAL -- The Harlan Community girls golf team suffered a pair of dual meet losses earlier this week at Atlantic and Kuemper Catholic.

Lee Pedersen, 56

    OMAHA -- Lee D. Pedersen, 56, Omaha, formerly of Harlan, died Friday, May 6.    Services will be held Wednesday, May 11 at 10:30 a.m. at Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church in Omaha.  Visitation is Tuesday, May 10 from 6-8 p.m.

Josephine Leslie, 95

    AVOCA -- Josephine Thelma Leslie, 95, Avoca, died May 5 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services were held Monday, May 9 at 10 a.m. at St.

DEFYING GRAVITY

    HARLAN – Two Harlan Community High School STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) teams finished first and second at the fourth-annual Anti-Gravity Games on Saturday, April 30 in Council Bluffs.    The fourth-annual event was hosted by Iowa Western Community College in partnership with Google.  The goal of the event is to encourage participation in the STEM fields.    The winning team of Mason Chamberlain, Matt Devine, Garrett Erl

City administrator Cox announces resignation

    HARLAN – Harlan City Administrator Terry Cox submitted his resignation to the Harlan City Council Tuesday, May 3, after 39 years of service to the community.    The announcement comes roughly two weeks following an open meeting of the city’s personnel and finance committee where Cox’s expense reports came into question by city council members.    Cox’s resignation is effective June 30 at the end of his current one-year contract.  Cox waive

Ernst tours Farmtable on county stop

HARLAN -- Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst toured the Farmtable Procurement and Delivery location in Harlan Wednesday, May 4 as part of her 99-county tour of Iowa.  Ernst learned from Daniel Rosmann and Ellen Walsh-Rosmann, above, about their business, which helps small and mid sized farms bring fresh and organic produce and local dairy to chefs, grocery stores and buying clubs.  (Photo by Kim Wegener)

Let’s Get Ready to Rumble!

    HARLAN – The racing season roars into action this weekend with the opening night at the Shelby County Speedway in Harlan.    Under the promoting team of Doug and Robin Batz and Denny and Mary Petersen, the 2016 season opener will be Saturday, May 7 under the theme Mother’s Day at the Races.  Drawings for prizes for mothers will be held during the evening.
