Elk Horn Fire Department lights up fire hall sign

    ELK HORN -- Over the course of the last few years, the Elk Horn Fire and Rescue building has seen many changes, but the newest addition is a metal and stained glass sign hanging outside the Fire Station.    “The most important aspect of Fire and Rescue is having proper equipment and training to make sure we are ready when emergencies occur.” said Lori Hoflen, a 15 year volunteer with Elk Horn Fire and Rescue.

Swimming Pool Rules

    HARLAN – Warm weather this summer has created the opportune time to lay by the pool and relax, but with that luxury comes the realization that there are specific rules in place regarding backyard pool installation.    Harlan Fire Chief and Building Inspector Roger Bissen said this year has seen many residential swimming pools show up in back yards.  Some of these pools are being placed in yards without a fence, he said.

Shelby County EMS awarded $25,000 grant

    COUNTY -- Shelby County Emergency Services in Harlan has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the American Heart Association as part of Mission: Lifeline, an American Heart Association community-based initiative aimed at improving the system of care for heart attack patients throughout rural Iowa.    Each year, hundreds of thousands of Americans have the most serious type of heart attack known as an ST-elevated myocardial infarction, or STEMI

Gov. Branstad hosts ag industry town hall in Harlan Friday

    HARLAN -- Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad will be in Harlan Friday, July 8 hosting an ag industry town hall meeting.    The meeting will be held at the Therkildsen Center in Harlan from 10:30-11:30 a.m.    The public is invited to attend the event.  Hosted by the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, updates on local projects will be presented and there will be a question and answer period.

New Laws on the Books

    STATE -- New laws went  into effect July 1 that influences citizens statewide on subjects regarding rural bridges, veterans, farm tenancies and various tax codes.    Senator Jason Schultz weighed in and explained the various changes coming to the region. Representative Steven Holt could not be reached for comment.

Birthday Milestones - Jack Osborn

    WALNUT -- Jack Osborn of Walnut will celebrate his 80th birthday on July 12. His family is planning a card shower in his honor. Cards will reach him if sent to 50833 Hwy 83, Walnut, IA 51577. Weddings - Rebecca and Jay Petersen

OMAHA -- Rebecca Zaiss and Jay Petersen both of Omaha exchanged marriage vows in a double ring ceremony at First Central Congregational Church in Omaha on January 9, 2016. A reception and dance were held at the Downtown Hilton in Omaha.    Parents of the couple are Anne Vanden Dries, Las Vegas; John Zaiss, Whitefish, MT; and Larry and Barb Petersen, Elk Horn.

Clark Mathisen, 81

    OMAHA, NE -- Clark Gary Mathisen, 81, Omaha, formerly of Elk Horn, died July 1.    Services will be held Wednesday, July 6 at 11 a.m. at Morning Star Lutheran Church in Omaha with a graveside service Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Atlantic Memorial Cemetery in Atlantic, with military honors.  Family will receive friends Tuesday, July 5 from 3-7 p.m.
