Atlantic avenges HCHS

 ATLANTIC -- Alexis Handel homered and drove in five runs Monday night as the Atlantic softball team crushed Harlan Community 10-1 to avenge an early-season loss to the Cyclones. Highlighted by a five-run second, the Trojans (18-10 overall, 10-4 Hawkeye Ten) scored in all but one inning and outhit HCHS 12-8, also taking advantage of five errors.

Vikings to play for third in WIC Baseball Tourney

 AREA -- The AHSTW baseball team advanced to the semifinals of the Western Iowa Conference Baseball Tournament with a pair of wins on Monday, beating Riverside 13-4 in first-round action before topping host Tri-Center 9-4 in a quarterfinal.

    HARLAN -- Vernal D. Henriksen, 104, Harlan, died Wednesday, July 6 in Harlan.    Services will be held Saturday, July 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Friends may call Friday, July 8 from 2-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m.

    HARLAN -- Charles Edward Jacobs, 84, Harlan, died July 5 at Elm Crest Retirement Community.    Services will be held Saturday, July 9 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  A wake service will be held Friday, July 8 at 7 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.  Visitation is Friday from 5-8 p.m.

David Behrens, 66

    HARLAN -- David John Behrens, 66, Harlan, died July 2 at Creighton University Medical Center.    Services were held Thursday, July 7 at 10:30 a.m.

Clifford Kruse, 59

    HARLAN -- Clifford Alan Kruse, 59, Harlan, died July 4 at his home.    Services will be held Friday, July 8 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  A wake service was held Thursday, July 7 at 7 p.m. at the church.  Visitation was Thursday from 5-8 p.m.

James Wolfe, 38

    MINDEN -- James Steven Wolfe, 38, Minden, died July 3 at his home.    Services will be held Saturday, July 9 at 3 p.m. at United Church of Christ in Minden.  Visitation is Friday, July 8 from noon-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m.
