    HARLAN -- Nothing beats an evening at the ballpark.  T-ballers recently wrapped up their season.  Here are some highlights from recent games.

Summer reading program’s “athletic theme” under way

    HARLAN -- “On your mark, get set, read” is this year’s summer reading program theme. Harlan Community Library is teaming up with Petersen Family Wellness Center and Iowa State University Extension Office to present the athletic inspired program.    “It gets them in the library,” said Pat Engemann, children’s librarian. “It get’s them acquainted with Petersen Wellness this summer.

Harlan Fire Department aims to form association

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Fire Department is in the process of forming an association in an effort to help with financial clarity regarding donations made to the department each year.    The Harlan City Council has given its blessing to the department as it seeks to develop the Harlan Fire Association.    Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen said it’s an issue that has been discussed statewide in recent months.    “We had other departments around the

ANNIVERSARIES - Joyce and Sylvan Kenkel

    PANAMA -- Sylvan and Joyce Kenkel of Panama celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 18. Their family is planning a card shower in their honor.    Cards will reach them if sent to 208 1600th Street, Panama, IA 51562. ANNIVERSARIES - Ted and Debby Tarney

    PORTSMOUTH -- Ted and Debby Tarney of Portsmouth will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on June 26. They plan to celebrate with their family which includes Ted and Lori Tarney, Avoca; and Tina Peck, Irwin; and four grandchildren.    Ted is employed in maintenance at Monogram Foods. Debby works as a cook at Rose Vista Home in Woodbine.

ANNIVERSARIES - Art and Linda Andersen

    HARLAN -- Art and Linda Andersen of Harlan mark 50 years of marriage on June 25. They  celebrated their anniversary with their entire family with a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida.    The couple’s two daughters and sons-in-law are Julie and Steve Livingston, Harlan; and Tammy and Jeff Cox, Council Bluffs.

ANNIVERSARIES - Rosemary and Virgil Koppold

    HARLAN -- Virgil and Rosemary Koppold of Harlan will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on July 2.    Their family includes Terry Koppold, Harlan; the late Barbara Sullivan, Mike and Jean Koppold, Council Bluffs; Chuck and Junie Koppold, San Antonio, TX; Connie and Jeff Carmichael, Newton; Catie Walker, Daytona, FL; Faye and Al Kelly, Rancho Cucamonga, CA; Sally Koppold, Omaha; Joan and Ron Maybee, Covina, CA; and Scott and Michelle

HCHS baseball team bounces back from second loss of the year to beat Rams in game two

 GLENWOOD -- After letting a two-run seventh-inning lead slip away in game one of Thursday’s doubleheader at Glenwood, Harlan Community played much better baseball in the night cap to earn a Hawkeye Ten split with the Rams. Glenwood won the first game, 7-6, on Drake Harrington’s two-out, walk-off three-run double in the bottom of the seventh while HCHS led start to finish in game two and won 8-6. The 2nd-ranked (Class 3-A) Cyclones lost for ju

HARLAN -- Add another name to the short list of Harlan Community baseball players who have hit three home runs in a single game. Derek Schwartz, a 2011 HCHS graduate, hit three home runs at Council Bluffs St. Albert during a July, 2010 game his junior year. Current Cyclone senior Kyle Juhl homered three times vs. Clarinda on June 9 and Matt Daeges went deep three times vs.

HCHS softball takes game one of two vs. Rams behind Hopkins five-hitter

 GLENWOOD -- Harlan Community split a varsity softball doubleheader at Glenwood on Thursday, winning the first game 2-1 before dropping the night cap 15-8. The game-one victory snapped a three-game slide for the Cyclones, who finished the night at 7-9 overall and 5-6 in the Hawkeye Ten.
