MMC proposes lower tax levy; asking will remain the same

    HARLAN -- Myrtue Medical Center Board of Trustees is proposing to lower the current tax levy rate from $1.20792 per thousand taxable valuation to $1.17357 for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. The public hearing date and time on the tax asking proposal for 2019-2020 is set for Tuesday, February 26 at 7:30 a.m.

Howards gift $100,000 to Elk Horn’s Danish Windmill

    ELK HORN -- When Mike Howard visited the Danish Windmill for the first time, he watched the 15-minute video featuring Harvey Sornson, the local farmer who came up with the crazy idea of bringing the 60-foot Danish Windmill to Elk Horn.      Harvey’s comment, “No one said we couldn’t do it…so we did”, made an impression on Howard.

Utilities set to raise water rates March 1

    HARLAN -- Water rates for Harlan residents and businesses will go up March 1 following action at the Jan.

Pre-applications now accepted for home rehab grant program

    HARLAN -- The City of Harlan is seeking pre-applications from homeowners interested in participating in the Community Development Block Grant home rehabilitation program.  The city with the assistance of Southwest Iowa Planning Council is submitting an application to the Iowa Economic Development Authority in April for the housing CDBG program.

Shelby County Catholic School celebrates Catholic Schools Week

    HARLAN -- Students at the Shelby County Catholic School celebrated Catholic Schools Week this week.    During the celebration of Catholic Schools Week, one of the daily themes is “Celebrating the Nation.”  On this day, students and staff recognize the many freedoms they have and show appreciation to those who have served our country.      Students made thank you cards and valentines to send to veterans.   

Winter storms, cancelled blood drives strain supply

Supervisors approve master matrix for Shelby County

    COUNTY – The Shelby County Board of Supervisors unanimously has approved a resolution allowing for the master matrix to be utilized in the county in regards to livestock confinements.    The approval didn’t come without conversation, however, and the thought there has to be some changes in regard to public hearings about confinements.    The matrix is a scoring system that is used to evaluate the siting of permitted confinement feeding ope

TESLA CHARGING STATION INSTALLED

    SHELBY -- A Tesla supercharger station has been installed at The Corn Crib in Shelby just off Interstate 80.  There are eight superchargers available 24 hours per day, seven days per week, offering up to 120kW.  The charging stations are popping up all across the country to allow Tesla drivers to quickly recharge the vehicle batteries, many times within 30 minutes. 

Reynolds, Gregg make stop at HCHS

    HARLAN -- Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg made a quick stop in Harlan Friday, Jan. 25 as part of their Condition of the State tour.  Earlier in the day the two had stopped in Sioux City and Denison, and made a half-hour visit to Harlan Community High School at 2:45 p.m.
