COUNTY – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach – Shelby County has developed a committee to support the agriculture and natural resources programming for the county.    The committee consists of members of the ag community who have been asked to meet on a quarterly basis to discuss the community needs and to coordinate efforts.    Here is the fifth in a series profiling committee members.    For information on the committee and its work

Former Harlan teacher garners his 1944 Drake Relays medal, 74 years later

Williams, 93, was a former Harlan high school government teacher and coach in the 1960s-70s. Williams was also instrumental in the growth the Harlan Little League and Legion baseball programs. His late wife, Donna, who was the Shelby County Recorder from 1971 - 1986, was believed to be one of the first female county recorders in Iowa and her husband, Ted, was very involved in helping her campaign.
 

MURALS DISCOVERED DURING RENOVATION

    Elk Horn - The Norse Horse Tavern’s building has been under renovation and remodeling for several months. One unique discovery was a pair of murals under wallpaper that Arron Dixon, owner/manager, is guessing is from 1915-1920.

Kenkel appointed board of supervisors chairman

    COUNTY – Steve Kenkel has been named chairman of the Shelby County Board of Supervisors this year, and will preside over a board that is currently working diligently to prepare next year’s budget.    Kenkel is joined on the board by supervisors Charles Parkhurst and newcomer Darin Haake.    Kenkel was unanimously elected chairman while Parkhurst was unanimously elected vice-chairman of the 2019 board.    Besides tackling the budget this mo
