Public input requested for Harlan housing assessment

    HARLAN -- Southwest Iowa Planning Council (SWIPCO), with the City of Harlan, is holding a housing assessment meeting Thursday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Therkildsen Activity Center.    The purpose of the meeting is to gather public input on the current condition of the housing stock in the City of Harlan; addressing rehabilitation of current housing, development of new housing, and affordability of housing.

    HARLAN -- Local legislators made a stop in Harlan Saturday, Feb.

Shelby County tallies 9.5 inches of snow

    COUNTY -- Shelby County officially received from 8-9.5 inches of snow Saturday evening through Sunday morning.  Local residents spent much of Sunday digging out from the latest round of snow.  The forecast calls for two more rounds of winter weather this week.  Tuesday night through Wednesday could bring from 4-6 inches more snow, and another storm will trek through Friday night through Saturday.

Home, Garden & Living Show March 23

Teen health fair moved to Sat., March 23

    HARLAN -- Impending inclement weather on Sat., February 23 forced officials to postpone the Teen Health and Resiliency Fair to Sat., March 23, from 9 a.m.-noon at Harlan Community High School.    This free event is designed to help promote healthy lifestyle choices for teens and their families.

Harlan’s Burchett competes on Truck Night

Harlan FFA celebrating National FFA Week

HARLAN -- The Harlan FFA Chapter is celebrating National FFA Week, Feb. 16-23. This year’s theme is “Just One” and it embraces more than 90 years of FFA traditions while looking forward to the organization’s future. Nearly 670,000 members will participate in National FFA Week activities at local, state and national levels.

AHSTW SPEECH ON TO STATE!

    AVOCA -- The AHSTW Speech team set two new school records by having a Readers Theatre performance and the same Improvisation team selected for the Large Group All-State Speech Festival for three consecutive years.    Approximately 24,000 students started competing at the district level from 347 schools and less than 1,700 students earned the right to be named as Outstanding Performers for All-State.

FIREFIGHTER AWARDS

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Fire Department held its annual Awards Banquet and Firefighter Recognition on Saturday evening, Feb. 2 at the C.G Therkildsen Center.

Citizen/Volunteer of the Year

    COUNTY -- Bob and Glenda Mortensen were named Citizen/Volunteers of the Year at ceremonies held Friday, Feb.

Ernst tours Smitty Bee Honey Sat.

    DEFIANCE -- Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst made a stop in Defiance Saturday, Feb. 9 to tour Smitty Bee Honey. Ernst was in western Iowa as part of her 99-county tour for 2019.  Earlier in the day she held a town hall meeting in Audubon where she met with constituents.  The stop at Smitty Bee Honey was not open to the public. 

Board, with attorney, holds closed session

    HARLAN -- The HCS Board of Education met in closed session for approximately 5 1/2 hours Monday evening, Feb.

Bieker, Trickel question costs
