Historic Flooding in Shelby County

County embargoes all gravel roads

    COUNTY -- Shelby County early Thursday morning, March 14 passed a resolution of necessity placing an embargo on all of the county’s gravel roads.    Load limits of 10 tons are placed immediately on all granular surfaced roadways within Shelby County.    It’s the first time since 2010 an embargo has been enacted, but then it was a limited embargo.  County officials are calling this week’s snow melt, rain and release of frost from the ground

BPA STUDENTS ON TO NATIONALS!

HARLAN -- Students from Harlan Community High School will be attending the Business Professionals of America (BPA) 2019 National Leadership Conference, in Anaheim, CA, May 1-5.    HCHS chapter members will join nearly 6,000 conference delegates from across the nation to compete in national level business skills competitions and attend leadership development, workshops, general sessions, and national officer candidate campaigns and elections.  

Students show off projects at Science Fair

    HARLAN -- A science fair showcasing projects by 28 groups of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students from Shelby County was held Thursday evening at Vet’s Auditorium in Harlan. The event was coordinated by Harlan Community Library and ISU Extension and Outreach - Shelby County. Funds for the program were made possible by the Monogram Loves Kids Grant.       Each individual or group project was judged by three judges.

Myrtue Board approves lower tax levy rate

    HARLAN -- Following no written or verbal comments or objections during the February public hearing, the Myrtue Medical Center Board of Trustees approved to lower the current tax levy rate from $1.20792 per thousand taxable valuation to $1.17357 for the 2019-2020 fiscal year.    MMC Chief Financial Officer Kristy Hansen told the board in January the new levy rate is expected to generate the same funding as last year’s $1.20 levy with $1,018

Harlan man wanted on murder warrant

A Harlan man is being sought by police on a warrant for first-degree murder in the death of 38-year-old Adam Angeroth of Council Bluffs in January.    The warrant was issued for Nicholas Haner, 20, of Harlan.  Two others are in custody of law enforcement.  Xavier Smith-Catchings, 16, Omaha, has been charged with first-degree murder in Angeroth’s death.  He is being held at the Southwest Iowa Detention Center in Council Bluffs on $1 million bon

High marks for HCHS CyberPatriot Team

    HARLAN - Last spring, an estimated 70 students received local scholarship awards from 48 sponsoring organizations, totaling close to $230,000 in funding and scholarships coming from other sources which would likely bring the total to well over $500,000.      The scholarships below are divided by those with applications available at the HCHS guidance web site and those available directly from the organization (available online).

Harlan proposes small tax asking increase

    HARLAN – Harlan property owners will see a tax levy decrease next year as part of a proposed budget to be considered by the Harlan City Council tonight, Tuesday, March 5.    A public hearing on the proposed $7.59 million budget for the 2019-20 fiscal year is tonight at 5:15 p.m.
