Kids Fest a big success

HARLAN -- Hundreds of kids turned out Saturday, April 27 for the annual Kids Fest Celebration in Harlan, which again was deemed a huge success.

ARBOR DAY TRADITION

    COUNTY -- The Shelby County Plant Iowa Committee handed out trees to fifth-graders in Shelby County’s schools last week.  Here, Harlan Community Intermediate School students accepted their trees from Plant Iowa Committee members.    The committee said they are handing out hundreds of trees this year to the students.  The project has been ongoing for the past 36 years.  (Photo by Kim Wegener)

AUDITION FOR THE MUSIC MAN

    HARLAN – Auditions will be held next week for the Harlan Community Theatre’s production of The Music Man, to be presented later this summer.    Open auditions for all ages for the first annual summer production of the Harlan Community Theatre will be held Sunday, May 5 at 6 p.m. and Monday, May 6 at 7 p.m.

Harlan applying for housing grant

    HARLAN – The City of Harlan continues to work with the Southwest Iowa Planning Council (SWIPCO) on an application for a Community Development Block Grant for housing rehabilitation of six homes in Harlan.    Alexis Fleener, Community Development Team Leader with SWIPCO, said this grant program is very competitive because housing rehabilitation is a big need all across the state.

MMC responds to community health needs

    HARLAN - Myrtue Medical Center works with community partners and the general public to determine health care priorities through a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) provided by Myrtue’s Public Health Department.      The most recent Public Health CHNA was completed in early 2016. Among the highest level of responses was a need for mental wellness and more willingness to seek help.

Senator Chuck Grassley visits Myrtue Medical Ctr.

    HARLAN -- Senator Chuck Grassley made a special stop at Myrtue Medical Center during his visit to Shelby County on April 16.

COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY

    HARLAN -- Approximately 150 Harlan Community High School students spent Thursday morning, April 18 volunteering for Community Service Day projects throughout Harlan and the communities in the Harlan Community School District.    There were more than 55 projects in the community available for the volunteers who worked on a day off from school.  

Myrtue roofing project set to begin on May 1

    HARLAN -- The re-roofing hospital and clinic project at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan will begin on May 1 with substantial completion expected by November 1.  MMC Board of Trustees approved the low bid of $253,750 from McCoy Roofing, Omaha, for the roofing project at the March board meeting.

FEMA to make rounds in Shelby County

COUNTY -- Shelby County Emergency Management Director Alex Londo said this week that personnel with the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) will be out in Shelby County going door to door to get people who were affected by the floods to register to receive assistance.    All of the people going around will have identification on them to show that they work for FEMA. The crews will be out over the next week to two weeks.

Second measles case confirmed in Iowa

    REGIONAL -- A second case of measles has been confirmed in Iowa, through testing at the State Hygienic Lab.    This case is an unvaccinated Northeast Iowa resident, who is a household contact of the recently confirmed measles case (an unvaccinated Northeast Iowa resident with recent travel to Israel, where measles transmission is occurring).

Former Harlan residents compete in Bataan Memorial Death March

    WHITE SANDS MISSLE RANGE, NM – Two former Harlanites recently participated in the Bataan Memorial Death March in New Mexico and took top five honors in the event.    The Bataan Memorial Death March is a challenging march through the high desert terrain of the White Sands Missile Range.

Navy Veteran Bob Mahoney appalled by Carver's comments

Daniels says nobody questions sacrifices of military service

"I respect all military and all the sacrifices that come with this, but this is not what anyone is questioning," Daniels said.  Her husband has served in the Army/National Guard for 20 years and was deployed for 1 1/2 years.

Fourth Closed Session; No Action

Matt Carver addressed a sizeable crowd of teachers and community members at a school board meeting Monday, saying some in the Harlan Community have attacked Wagner for his service to the country.  Carver, who identified himself as legal services director for School Administrators of Iowa and as a member of the Iowa National Guard who has served with Supt.
